upholstery??
Im looking for some foam and a cover for a 71 bench seat. Looking online the foam seams to run in about the $400 range and the cover in the $300 range. For the cover that doesnt seam that bad of a price, but for the foam that seams ridiculous!!! Iv never had anything upholstered, and i havent called any shops yet. But what can i expect $$ wise to have a seat done for?? Any info would be great guys!! Thanks!!

Re: upholstery??
Foam is petroleum based which is why it's so expensive. You're best bet might be to get a whole new seat at a salvage yard, even if it's out of a later model truck. Around here, bench seat can be bought for $35-$50. Then you can buy a cover and recover it yourself it take it somewhere. I've never had one done, but I hear all the time you can get a seat re-covered for $250 to $300.

Re: upholstery??
1. Go to junk yard and find some foam
2. Buy a decent vinyl cover from Brothers for $140 3. Install it yourself (buy good hog ring pliers first) or pay an installer about $100-$200 to install it for you Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: upholstery??
I would never pay that for a piece of foam!
Yours might not even need new foam. If it's a heavily worn seat, you could just add a layer of carpet padding (1/2") to help firm it back up or if it's damaged such as missing a piece on driver side from a worn hole in upholstery, you could add a piece of foam to fill in the damaged area. I did that with my wrecker project. The driver side material was worn and torn so the foam was missing a bit from all the years of the driver sliding in and out of the truck. I just cut some foam (just some flat box packing material type, nothing special, you might have some lying around) and using spray adhesive, added it to fill the void. When the cover is back on, you'll never know it was repaired.

Re: upholstery??
i have had great luck many times with local upholstery shop/// quite a few times have had real cheap rebuilds for alot less money than the "factory correct" covers alone

Re: upholstery??
$400 is ridiculous for foam. I'm sure you could buy that much unshaped foam for a fraction of that. Petroleum products have gone up,but foam is still mostly air.

Re: upholstery??
Also remember there are different variations of our seats. Some have full foam bottoms, spring and foam bottoms as well as full foam backs and springs. Could be variable combos. Ask me how I know. I took 3 seats and came up with enough foam and springs to fix my original.

Re: upholstery??
Thanks guys for the info!! Yeah the seat was pretty toast, but it was free so oh well!! lol. It was a home for some rats for a long time, it even had some tunnels in it that ya cant see in the pic! The foam was absolutely disgusting so I trashed all of it.

Re: upholstery??
Ok, in that case you did the right thing! LOL
If it were me, I'd check some junkyard trucks or do some wanted ads on the net for a good used one.
