Re: Looking for new bolds for 51' truck doors

Fastenal I tried to post a hot link but just came up as text. Google fastenal then bolts> flange bolt> 3/8 x 24> x1" if they are the same as TF hinges. $1.31 each plus shipping. If you live in a large metro area they might have a local store, or any good bolt hardware store will have them (not big box, they don't carry flange bolts). If you live in the country your tractor supply place might have them too.

Re: Looking for new bolds for 51' truck doors

The guys missed where you are at so I'd have to say that it would probably work best to go to your local fastener (bolt) store and ask for grade 8 3/8-24x1 bolts in the quantity you need. That would be the industrial fastener store you get you other bolts at or if there is a Caterpillar Equipment dealer Try http://www.pon-cat.com/ they should have them.
LMC doesn't list them and Chevs of the 40's shows a regular Grade 8 bolt with a star lock washer https://www.chevsofthe40s.com/detail..._5455_1st.html

Re: Looking for new bolds for 51' truck doors

I's forgotten about the Cat dealer, in the 80's it was the place I got all my inexpensive G8 fasteners. Any place that services heavy or farm equipment should have them. With the new higher postal rates shipping from the States would be as much as the bolts...I loose a lot of ebay sales when I give my overseas buyers the bad news...

Re: Looking for new bolds for 51' truck doors

Thank you all for the info,
My problem is that I live in the Netherlands.
And they dont sell a lot of bolds here that I can use.
And I want it to look also a little bit original.
I cant find them at LMC and Brothers.

Re: Looking for new bolds for 51' truck doors

Sir you can find any bolt you need at www.boltdepot.com and they can most likely ship them overseas to you. You just need to know the size, thread count and grade of the bolt. So long as it was a standard type of bolt, it will look original.

Re: Looking for new bolds for 51' truck doors

I can the bolts and washers up and send them to you pretty easily but you should be able to find them at a Bolt vendor or the Caterpillar equipment outlet if it isn't too far from where you live.

Email me your address to mr48chev@yahoo.com and I'll try to come up with a cost tomorrow. The mail will be the major part of the cost. The bolts won't cost very much at Fasteners in Union Gap.

Here is a "Basics of Basics" on bolt sizes so you can order the correct bolts. http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/basi...ts-159715.html
All you need is to record the proper size and you can get them from a bolt supply on line. http://www.boltdepot.com/

Read the "Basics" so you FULLY understand how to size them. I am fascinated at how many pros I have worked with that haven't any idea what so ever how to size a bolt doing things like calling the bolt by the size wrench that is used on it. (insert rolling eyes smilie)

Re: Looking for new bolds for 51' truck doors

His problem is that he is in the Netherlands. SAE bolts may be hard to come by if you don't know where to look. That is the reason I suggested that he check with the Cat dealer as They should have them in stock but there may not be a Cat dealer close to where he is. It's kind of like someone finding that you are in California and asking if you can look at a truck in San Diego.

Fer I'll pick up the bolts in a few minutes and as they don't cost much I'll just keep them if you find a source. I will need the address you want them mailed to to calculate the shipping though. I did get your email.

Re: Looking for new bolds for 51' truck doors

Well I ran down to the bolt store

picked up eight grade 8 3/8x24x1 cap screws and 8 3/8 external star lock washers

I figure that you might need a 3/8-24 tap to clean the theads in the door posts so I'll have to hunt that down and then figure out what the postage is. So far we are in this 2.41 US.

Re: Looking for new bolds for 51' truck doors

Beat me to it, great minds think alike. I stopped by my hardware store but only flange bolts they had in stock were -16 thread. They did have the cap bolts in fine but wanted to check with the OP before getting them.

Re: Looking for new bolds for 51' truck doors

The cost of sending them looks to be about ten times the price of the bolts.

Fer this company was suggested when I asked on another forum. http://www.fastenal.com/web/nl/1139/netherlands

Check with them and I'll keep working on figuring out the shipping costs.

Something you might consider is Ebay's international shipping option. I don't know how they do it but on an international auction you pay the cost to have it shipped to a location in the US at USPO rates, then they ship it to the customer. I have never used it but was talking to a guy at a yard sale who does a lot of international Ebay and he said it has increased his sales because of the reduced cost. You could arrange a time with the buyer to post a Buy It Now auction so he can jump on it. Remember Ebay will take about 10 percent in fees...and paypal some more if you use them for payment.

Re: Looking for new bolds for 51' truck doors

Fees would be less than a buck but that might be an option to save him some money.
12 bolts 12 washers and a 3/8-24 tap to clean up the threads in the door jambs comes to 10.00 shipping them in a padded envelope with lumps over 1/2 inch thick comes to 42.00 from what I can figure.

I've got a thread on the HAMB asking for info on where to get bolts there as there has to be a source that guys in Europe are using without the hassle of paying big shipping costs

I sold a book on ebay a few weeks ago that ended up going international with that system. It went to Christchurch NZ but I sent to some locatoin in the US with a code on it.

Right now I'm just trying to keep his costs to a minimum.
