Failed inspection!
Did the stock air cleaners on these trucks have a heat riser that comes off exaust manifold? I failed inspection the other day and the guy said it was coz the ait cleaner was made to have a heat riser and my truck doesn't have one.
Do you think I could just get an aftermarket chrome air cleaner and put it on and it would pas then? THis truck passed last year withsame set up???? Mike

I have the same thing missing, but the inspection guy just told me to fix it and gave me a sticker anyway (never did it, though. don't know where to get the hose). Do you have a hole on top of your driver side exhaust manifold? That's where the hose plugs in.

So long as you take the apperatus off of the exhaust manifold or you could just go to autozone and get some Heat Pipe for that purpose.

My exaust manifold does NOT have plumbing for the heat riser, it is smooth on the top of the manifold. Does anyone have pics of the manifold part of the heat riser? It has 4 holes on the side of the exaust manifold that are plugged.
Alot of y'all have chrome air cleaners, do y'all have trouble at inspection time? Mike

I don't have any close up pictures, and I don't have my truck here at work. It's about a two inch hole right on top of the front half of the driver side manifold, if that helps.

Just double checked mine, nothing like that on my manifolds. Which is correct for '72, the air cleaner or the manifolds? I'm hoping I don't have to get different manifolds!

There is actually a metal shield that bolts on top of the driver side manifold that
has the attachemnt for the heat pipe. The hole is not on the manifold itself. Im sure someone will post a pic, if not I will get one tonight. Ah, found a pic here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ight=heat+pipe

I had the same problem. Just get some heat pipe from a autoparts store, and slip it on the airfilter housing and have the other end resting on the exhaust manifold. It will pass then.

thanks for the replies, I guess I'll go to the parts board and look for the heat shield/riser thing.

You could also try another inspection place. I got mine done at one of those quik lube places full of 18 year old kids. Like I said before, they just told me to fix it and gave me a sticker anyway.

Not all inspection shops are that picky or pricky, LOL. Put a chrome one on and try another place, must be a million where you live in the state of Texas.

I've (luckily) never failed inspection. Do you still have to pay the $12.50 if you fail?

I'd take it somewhere else for the inspection. When I get mine done this ought to be interesting given the fact that the whole induction system has been replaced with a TPI system. I think I'm going with Texas antique plates to avoid the entire inspection process.....

That was what I thought, and I argued that this was a safety inspection only! He said that if the vehicle was supposed to have the equipment when it was sold , it should still have it to pass. He also implied that if my engine was newer than '85 it should have catalytic converters(I'm pretty sure he knew my engine is a new GM crate engine, and mentioned the catalytic c**p to get me to shut up). SOOOOOOO, I shut up and wrote a check for $12.50, and left. I didn't mention he also failed me coz my high beam indicator light, ( in the dash), was out and the license plate light lens was cracked! I'm new to the area where I'm living now and will take some time to learn where NOT to go for stuff like this.

It's that way in Oregon, too, where there are inspection stations and the roads are paved.

Mike,
Change the air cleaner to aftermarket and take it to an inspection station where the majority of there business is inspections. Also show up just before closing time. You will want to be the last inspection of the day. The part that installs around the manifold is a heat stove and it is a 2 part item. They are kind of rare because they rust and and tend to self destruct due to the heat. Most folks do away with them except the ones doing an original restore.

I have a chrome cleaner on mine that is open. I was told that it had to be enclosed but passed anyway. The same inspector told me I did not need a high beam indicator but that cant be right. I have always had good luck I guess, but they just dont seem too picky on these trucks to me.
