Woodgrain dash bezel

I was out at the junk yard today and found a very nice woodgrain dash bezel from a 1989 Suburban. I thought this would work for the 1981-1987 trucks. After getting home with it, I don't think it will work. Does this style bezel only fit the 88-91 trucks? Thanks

Re: Woodgrain dash bezel

it looks like it would fit, is it the radio opening that doesn't jive?

Just an idea for you, if you want the wood look, try shelf paper, it's sounds cheesy, but it turned out surprisingly clean for me..

The radio opening is 89-91 only. You could use it on 84-up, especially if you were to put in a CD player and black out the dash around it.

Re: Woodgrain dash bezel

I think I have that same woodgrain bezel for an 81-83 that I bought thinking it would fit in my 75. I can look if you want and send you a pic.

Re: Woodgrain dash bezel

Yes, I think it is the radio opening that will not work. It is not just that I like any woodgrain, but I like the woodgrain used on these trucks. So far as I can tell it is very different from all the 87 and earlier woodgrain. It is bright and has a true burl look to it. I have tried the "shelf paper" thing in the past. I could never find anything that was the exact right match and it was only a matter of time before it started to peel. I am adding a picture of the dash in my 1978 GMC. I don't know who added the woodgrain but you can see a lot of the corners have started to peel away.

Re: Woodgrain dash bezel

I got one out of a 89' Suburban also and it came with an adapter to mount a normal size aftermarket DIN stereo. It will work in our trucks with this adapter. I plan to use it in my truck with the adapter. I'm not sure if someone made this or it was sold in the aftermarket.

Re: Woodgrain dash bezel

i have a 89 pad on a 78 truck with 78 bezel
works no gaps

89 bezel the wipers are in the coloum ,before mid 80s it's in the bezel

when the wipers move the hole in the bezel moved for the headlight too

89 bezel with 78 pad left a weird gap along the top of bezel

it's the same as my 89 btw

Re: Woodgrain dash bezel

The one you got is indeed for 89-91. It is a 1.5 din opening. Motornut covered the rest of the info.

Din is used to describe stereo opening sizes. Most aftermarket stereos are 1 din. The ones that have like a 6" or 7" screen for nav or other uses are 2 din, or the size of two of the regular ones stacked on top of each other. 1.5 din is half bigger than a regular stereo.

Re: Woodgrain dash bezel

And the radios that would have been in there pictured. Very easy to make them fit, especially if the dash has already been butchered for an aftermarket radio.
