Need input on wheel color and ideas

So I am trying to figure out what I want to do with wheels on my Panel. I picked up some more slot mags (15x8.5 and 15x10, along with the 15x7 it came with and pictured below). Well since the rear wheel wells are tighter than trucks, I found the 15x8.5" with 3.75" BS will not allow the tire to clear the fender lip. With that I am going a different direction.

I picked up some 15x8, 4" BS "stock type" wheels. I am thinking of two different ideas. One, put some chrome caps and rings and paint the wheels OR go with a set of Moon Discs.

If I go with the rings/caps and paint the wheels, what color do you think? The blue of the body or white of the roof or silver or ???

Need ideas, pictures, thought or whatever. Thanks a bunch. Pic of the Panel.

Re: Need input on wheel color and ideas

personally not a big fan of colour coded steel wheels, unless the truck is black. It is all a matter of personal preference, and taste, more so taste I think. I am a fan of steel rally's with rings and caps myself, but this is your truck.

Re: Need input on wheel color and ideas

hmmm...well with the stock style wheels, i think i'd stay away from blue since you already have so much blue...i'd probably try white first, but silver or black might work as well...if the roof wasn't white, i'd throw out some other color ideas, but i just don't think they'd work as it is now....and Moon discs might look cool as well....i run them on my '93 S-10...but i don't have any pics of them on a Panel...here's a link to pics of a Burb with some:

Re: Need input on wheel color and ideas

agree 100% with likaroc. Black if the top wasn't white, so that leaves white (my 2 cents only). Truck has so much blue, color-matched would maybe be a bit too much. I'm a fan of white steelies (but am biased...).

Personally, I really like the slots better than moons (minus the white drums and center caps), but that's just personal preference. You can't go wrong, great looking panel you got there!

One question - you mentioned the wheel arch being smaller than a truck - are you referring to JUST a longbed truck, or all? (as far as I knew, I thought longbed wheel arch was just a little bigger, about 3", than a shortbed - so if yours is smaller than a truck - I would have assumed it matched a shortbed arch??? Is it smaller than even a shortbed?

I'd go rings and caps and color match that's what I did my rims were white when I bought them but if the white is off from your roof it will look funny just my opinion here's a pic of mine.

Re: Need input on wheel color and ideas

I went with white painted wheels and chrome caps & rings. The truck had black wheels but it didn't look right with the white top.

Re: Need input on wheel color and ideas

Thanks for the input and pics guys. Keep it coming.

I agree, I think that the blue would be too much and not look right. Lighter colors really look good but I think this blue is getting too dark.

I am liking the white like on this one,

Keep things coming but I am kind of leaning to try white. I guess that's the good thing about steelies, you can always repaint them. LOL

No, not the front to back size, it's the width, where the tire sits (the actual wheel well, not arch). Because of the double wall, the lip on the underside of the fender is huge. It's more than an 1" wide. Because of the way the inner panel is welded, you would be lucky to roll the fender about a 1/2". With the 8.5" wide slots and the 3.75" back spacing, they just sit too far out and the tire would rub.

At some point I want to mini tub it and run 15x10 but funds are not there to allow me to narrow the rear end at this point.

Re: Need input on wheel color and ideas

The owners picked out fawn for the wheel paint on the '65 I restored. As said already, blue would have been too much.

Re: Need input on wheel color and ideas

Here's a quick Photoshop on the rear wheel, white with a center cap but no trim ring (only pic I could easily find). I'm kind of liking this... I would be likely using a baby moon cap versus a stocker type.

grimace's colour coded wheels work, probably because it is a dark colour, like the white, trim rings and baby moons would look really nice

Re: Need input on wheel color and ideas

I have just ordered my rubber, my wheels are late 70's, early 80's 4x4 15x8's, they originally came white with a red pin strip or two, and 4x4 center caps. I had to machine out the center holes as they would not fit over my hubs. I will be finishing them up with beauty rings, and chrome center caps. Will post up the finished product when done.

Re: Need input on wheel color and ideas

Just to throw out another idea, the 67 that was with me at goodguys has body colored wheels with rings & centers on white walls. It really looks good too. He painted the wheels then scuffed them back up.

i like that, & "ultrahd4me's" example above too...and like you said, steel wheels are easily repaintable...not to mention, you can also play around with adding/removing various trim rings & center caps to see what you like best
