just wondering if someone had some info on this, i have 2 3/4 tons, one has a dana 60 rear axle and has 9/16 wheel studs on all 4 corners, the other 3/4 ton has a eaton rear and has 1/2 inch studs all around, is it related to the axles. thanks

The 9/16 should be on a '71/'72, and the 2/2 inch is on a '70 or older.

Like Longhorn mail said. The disc brake trucks have 9/16 and the drum brake trucks are 1/2". Pain in the rear if you do a disc swap. Eventually I plan on re-doing my parts truck 60 with the 3.73 and a TrackLok for my truck and will do 9/16 studs same time. (I bought 16 extra lugs when I bought my Alcoas, let me tell you that was quite painful as the list is over $5 apiece... fortunately I have a friend at the shop whol sold them to me for the "cheap" half price, but it still hurt!)Keep two sets of lugs for your spare if you have wheels that don't used tapered seat acorn nuts.

I believe it has to do with the axle/brake setup. Mine has a drum Dana 60 rear w/ 1/2" studs; the front is a disc Dana 44 w/ 9/16" studs.

Your rear is not original.
There is no way GM would sell a truck like that. That leaves them open to all kinds of problems leagaly.
Besides, the cost is something GM wouldn't have done. Thy would have had to supply it with 2 spares.

You would not have needed two spares since you could use the lugnuts on that axle, but GM would have never done that. My guess is Stout72's truck had a Corporate axle originally and it broke and was replaced with an older model Dana 60.

Wouldn't surprise me if it's not original. I have zilch in the way of history on this rig. Too many previous owners, I suppose. It's the way I got it.

Right now my spare is in the form of two large cans of Fix-o-flat. Some day I'll have to get a spare that will fit both ends. I've got old style American slotted wheels and they use bossed lug nuts, so I'll have to get a similar wheel for a spare so it can be used front or rear. Or a steel wheel that fits the 9/16 studs and two sets of spare lug nuts. Any suggestions?

Fast, it is a 3/4 ton Dana 60 full-floater, so the axle shafts don't have studs in them... The hubs do, but most likely the entire assembly was swapped since the hubs have replaceable bearing races there is no need to replace the entire assembly.

Well, I have run 9/16 hole wheels on a 1/2 inch stud axle in the past, no special lug nuts, no adapters...nothing. I didn't even realize it becouse i had no idea.
HOWEVER....if you decide to go this route, ensure that the lugnut actually hold the rim on good, and check it after a trip around the block, and then a short trip...ect.
I'm not really recomending it...just saying it has been done.

I haven't studied the differences in the mounting holes of my wheels to see if they're really different sizes or seat angles, but I have taken the old split rims that came on my '67 and mounted them on my '72. They seemed to mount just fine. If there was a difference in hole sizes of the wheels, I would think I would've had a problem mounting wheels from 1/2" lug truck onto a 9/16" lug truck. I also mounted the one-piece 9/16" lug wheels on the '67 with no apparent problem. [Note to self: study the wheels tonight when you get home!]
