interest in clear clearance lamps?

I *think* I have figured out not only an amber hockey puck replacement lens, (69/70 style) but also... maybe a clear lens verson too.
I'm talking brand spankin new, avalible anywhere in the country, and less than 5 bucks a lens.

Is this usefull info to the gang here?

I should hopefully have info and maybe even pics...certanly by Sunday.

Re: interest in clear clearance lamps?

Tell me more ! The factory lense is still a good part number and they cost about 8.00 each but if I can buy a replacement ( I'll need 5 ) for less... I'm interested. You are speaking of the cab lights , right ? Thanks, Dean

Re: interest in clear clearance lamps?

actually, the factory number for a 69/70 is not good, it has been superceeded with the model for 71 - 92, which has a slope from front to back, the NAPA catalog describes it as a 'fireman's hat' shape, while the 69/70 is a hockey puck shape.
Either way... I'll have info, along with nationwide p/n tomorow.

Re: interest in clear clearance lamps?

Well, the amber one was a bust. i assumed they had them, but they don't exist.
However... look at this. This is with NO MODS to the truck AT ALL. Simple remove and install (and install amber bulbs).

I haven't looked at them at night yet.. but I did flip them on durring day light.

You can see it is VERY close in dementions to the stock ones;

I'll have to get the rest tomorow, they are being delivered to my work, trucked in from Cincinati.
Call NAPA, and ask for p/n 680-2432 I got them for 3.50 each, but I think there was a small discount involved.

As much as I like the stock ones, these look pretty kick ass IMO.
They are back up lenses for certian styles of step vans. Our snap on truck came by with one broken, so i ordered one, and when I took i tout of the box.. I was like WOAH! This'll fit my truck!!!

Re: interest in clear clearance lamps?

My next one, whenever that may be, will be at least a 3/4 ton and have the cab lights. I like them! Just not sure how they would look on my short fleet, or I would put them on.

It's a very good idea and thrifty too that you discovered.

Re: interest in clear clearance lamps?

My 72 has a different type of light assembly, sort of. It is indeed the firemans hat that you spoke of and the lights themselves are mounted on raised pedestals which are part of the roof stamping. I like the clear lenses and I may give them a go. Thanks for the legwork ! Dean

Re: interest in clear clearance lamps?

Mine didn't come stock with the lights, so i don't have the raised pad. This cab is junk, and I wasn't sure if i wanted the lights or not, so i installed them on my junk cab, and now I know my next cab needs the raised pads.

Re: interest in clear clearance lamps?

ok, as promised, some almost night time photos. The clear one puts out as much light, but it defuses it diffarently. In lighter conditions, you see the bulb lit up (as seen in the shot where the flash was left on) but in the dark, it lights up the whole lens.
Good enough for me. I think I'll be runnin these clear ones for a while....but I'll hold onto my stock hockey pucks though.

Oh yeah, you may need longer screws. I didn't use stock ones, so i can't say. But if you scroll back up to the day light shots, you can see the hole the screw goes into is a bit taller than the amber one.

Did you say that these come with the rubber gasket to mount to the roof as well.

I think they look great and a heck of alot cheaper.

Re: interest in clear clearance lamps?

Those also look exactly like the backup lights on school busses. If you have a problem finding them, the local bus garage maybe able to hook you up... maybe even with some real good used ones since their condition is critical to passing state inspections. do they say grote on them?

Nope, not grote, these are glo-brite. (yes, spelled like that)
Being there is probably no onw too far from a NAPA, plus napaparts.com, i doubt anyone who is interested would have a hard time locating them.
They list for just shy of 5 bucks according to my reciept.

this is just my opinion...i dont like the clear lights anywhere on our trucks or any cars for that matter. seems like most trucks with cab lights are 4x4 or at least heavy duty rigs used as trucks. most of the trucks i see with the clear lense deal going on are slammed hotrodded style rigs and i dont think ive ever seen one of those with cab lights....all just my opinion, thank goodness we all dont have the exact same tastes...what a boring world that would be.

Re: interest in clear clearance lamps?

Whoa that's awesome! I've been running the later 71-87 lights on my truck, the GM part number for 'em is 684662 and they're made by Signal-Stat. The old hockey puck part number is 5961757. I like those but almost all the new Chevy/GMC and F350's around here have clear cab lights. I was driving down the highway and passed a F350 4x4 with clear cab lights and GREEN bulbs, don't know how they're getting away with it since they almost look blue.

Re: interest in clear clearance lamps?

CG, Very good counter point.
Rebuttal;
You are right, the clear lenses are mostly a hot rod/import thing. However, I have been seeing an increasing number of pick ups... 4X4 and one ton type trucks, that have clear lenses. Even a hand full of tractor trailer rigs running clear LED lights in back.
I will agree with you to the fact that a clear lens doesn't belong on the BACK of any vehicle. And, as we all know, they are actually illegal in many, if not most states. Overlooked or not, they are still not legit.
However, personally, (and many will agree) I think clear lenses on the sides and front of a vehicle looks 10 times better than the old amber and red. I would get the clear side markers if they would release them in the large smooth van style. The CST ones look funny in clear IMO.
However, something that this mod offers, is a shape and size, that is consistant with what came on the trucks (69 and 70) originally, but with a modern twist. And since used and NOS is all you'll ever find, it is a twist that will come in handy. Now that i have clear ones, some one could probably twist my arm enough to get me to come off my 8 or so amber ones...most of which are in quite good shape. So now, that'll free up some 'correct' lenses for another stock guy and his truck.
It's a win/win situation IMO.

Thanks for your feedback, and honesty.
This is not ment to be taken as a pissing match in any way shape or form. Just a rebuttal.
