Talking Front Diff Question

Hello All. I have a question that I can't find the answer for. I know someone here knows.

How can you tell the difference between a Dana 60 front end and a Dana 44? Without looking at the hubs. I understand some people put Dana 60 hubs on a Dana 44 diff. I would like to know for sure what front end I have. I have a Corporate rear end. Can anyone help???

Thank You
Troy

Re: Front Diff Question

This may need to be moved to the truck forum or maybe the 4 ba 4 section..

Re: Front Diff Question

Also, looking at the housing from the front. There should be a 60 or a 44 cast into the housing to the lower right of the cover.

Re: Front Diff Question

The pad where the steering arm bolts is different too. The Dana44 uses 3 bolts in a curved line, the Dana60 is 4 bolts in a square shape.

Never heard of that, I don't think that is even possiable.

D60 has Kingpins, little dome ontop of the knuckels with a zerk fitting in the center. D60 is only 8lug and the hubs are HUGE compared to d44 and ya only 3Ubolts = pass side has one ubolt and two bolts holding the spring pack to the axel.

Re: Front Diff Question

Thank you all for your help. The hubs on it are definetly much larger than a normal Dana 44 like what was on my last truck. I will try to post pics later. Also will check out other things listed above. I did notice the other day on the top right of the diff it had stamped backwards and upside down C-31625 or something along those lines. I will check for the 44 or 60 down on the bottom also. Will keep you posted.

Thanks again.

Re: Front Diff Question

they did make big hub 44s. I think the early 70s 3/4 tons. Im not sure. I have one in my 71 and think the only difference is the external bolt hub. so the hub has gotta be bigger to accept the bolts instead of a integral hub with splines.

Re: Front Diff Question

Well as promised here are the pictures. After scraping the gunk off the bottom of the diff I saw where it did say 44-5F. Definatly a Dana 44, but here are pics of the hubs. They measure 4.5" in dia. They are factory Spicer hubs I do know that. I would say they are large hub 44's.

Thanks again for everybodys help.

Re: Front Diff Question

That is a Dana 44 HD. It has the big hubs like mentioned, and another thing is that they have larger axle tubes. Be careful, the cast carrier housing on these can be weak. The housing axle tube bores were machined larger to accept the larger axle tubes and the housings are none to crack or break there.
