do not get too discouraged, find a front crossmember off a 74 to 87 pickup, or 74- 91 suburban, you get all the good stuff, bigger bearings, sway bars, disc brake rotors, etc......200.00 change it out your truck will stop lots better........new rotors for a 91 burb are only 32.00 each, new brake calipers are only 17.00 each, all the items to rebuild the later model front end only cost 150.00 it is a great performance --handling gain.
Better yet look around for a non running or wrecked burb 89 to 91, I bought one with a fresh engine, transmission, and rebuilt front end for $1,000.00 used it all in my build, tilt wheel, power steering, power brakes, engine tbi 350, transmission, wiring harness, in fuel tank pump (that is a story all to itself) power steering sector, etc......saves a bunch of money............. you still have to buy drop spindles but in the scheme of things it is not much to spend for the looks and performance of your truck.

If you use the front crossmember from a newer truck do you have to convert to a 5 lug rotor or do the 6 lug rotors work as well? I have been considering this but would like to keep the 6 lug setup.

Re: Drop spindles

I got aftermarket 6 lug rotors to stay with the 6 lug pattern. I figured if I had to buy rims I might as well stay all the same around.

I believe the rotor/hub assembly from a 78 or 79 7800lb 3/4 ton lets you maintain the 6 lug pattern. but I am not positive. Kieth

Re: Drop spindles

That is incorrect.

All 3/4 ton trucks thru '87 were 8 lug. Starting in '88 the light duty 3/4 tons (7300 GVW) had 6 lugs. However those rotors will not work on the '71-'87 spindles. They will only work on the '88-'98 1500 and LD 2500 spindles. If you want 6 lug rotors on the '71-'87 spindles, you will have to purchase the aftermarket rotors available from suppliers such as CPP, and ECE.
