turning long bed into short bed

What exactly has to be done to the frame to turn a long bed into a short bed, if anyone has pictures or instructions or know's of a good website, please let me know. I want a short bed 67-72 but I found a really good deal on a long bed in good shape, so i'm wondering what exactly it takes to do it, thank you in advance.

well i wanna lower it quite a bit, and i think long beds look ugly when lowered, just look to long to me. i like the short stubby look more.

I believe there was an article in Classic Truck
Magazine about shortening the bed not too
long ago. If anyone here subscribes, maybe
they'll go through their back issues and find the
right one.

shortened it 12" between cab mounts and then moved the back cab mounts back, also cut either 6" or 8 " off the back of the frame, ive heard both and havent done either yet because i havent pput my box on

67CST how did you find out that you were supposed to cut one foot out inbetween the cab mounts then one foot off the end of the frame? and also did you just scrape the long bed and get a short bed, or did you shorten the bed? i know you can order pretty much a whole new bed, except for i can't find a place to order a bed floor, but the bed sides, inner fenderwells, tailgate, headboard, everything else can be ordered new. thanks alot guys

Cutting a bed is fairly difficult, so you might be better off getting a shortbed. If you look at the frame dimensions listed in the assembly manual, you will note that lwb frames are 20" longer than swb frames, (12"+ 8"). Also, cutting the frame in the middle
leaves the bed mounts in the right position. Lopping off the 8" on the rear of the frame puts the bumper into the right position. It goes back to the way the frames were designed.

I had my long bed shortened about 6 years ago by Charlies Drop Shop in Portland Oregon. You can get all the parts for a SWB at Early Classic Enterprise.

I agree, you are much better off finding a donor bed from a swb. But I disagree on the 8 inches off the back. I did mine and followed instructions from an old Truckin' and it said to take 12 from under the cab and only 6 from the rear to mount the bumper in the correct postion. Some frames may be different I dont know but I do know that another member, I think his alias is mario? He took 8 inches off of his and said it was too much. So I suggest you cut 6 inches off the rear and if its not enough then take an additional 2 if the bumper sticks out.

My understanding was that the holes are already in the rear of the frame for the bumper. If you take the 12" under the cab the amount at the back should be give or take as long as you don't go past those holes or the box mounting points.
