Has anyone tried a Cummins in a Chevy? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

We were talking the other day and the Question of Would a cummins fit in a 73-87 Chevy 4x4 came up. I usually stick to the 67-72 page so I thought I would come over and ask the experts. Well guys Has it been done? Any pics?

i believe it has cause in one of my drunken stupors at the truck nats at raceway park i remember the announcer saying one of the chevy pickups had one in there custom built..... usually them mopar trucks have cummins in em

I know a guy here in town with a 85 4x4 1 ton with a cummins in it with a 400 turbo high/low range aux tranny and it PULLS like no tomorrow. Got several foward and reverse gears too. It is a decent looking conversion, has air and all. I haven't eyeballed it real good but it all fit.

1) Parts man at cummins southwest has done the swap in his 86 Burb....still owns it...still works there..

2) My bud in phx who bought my 72 K10 burb...is currently in process with the swap right now...bought his motor from Just Truck And Van in phx with full on Banks set up...using a NV5400 trans...

depends on what its going into...they are heavy, but it can be done. A couple of years back, I saw a Scout II with a Cummins ISB (the same 5.9L as the Dodge trucks). It had 8 lug axles, and presumably beefier than stock springs, etc.

That dually looked a pretty good buy.
I saw one on ebay a few months back in a fixed up 79 dually and it sold for $4500. The guy stated it waws installed by pros at a conversion place. I emailed the guy to see who he said 'profesionally' installed it as he said in the ad , but got no reply.
I'd like a single wheel ,C or K20,4 door with one.

I can take underhood pics if you want. This truck is soon to be lifted, and get new wheels and tires. Time for the stock look to go.

A friend of mine did it about three years ago, and I just bought it. He took the engine, trans, transfer case, radiator, etc. from a '91 Dodge. It fits tight, but not so tight that there's any problems from it. There's about an inch between the fan and rad. He had to "modify" the firewall a bit with a hammer. The Chevy condensor is till there and the A/C works, using the compressor that was on the Cummins. He used the PS pump on the Cummins with the GM steering box. Also used the vacuum pump on the Cummins and converted the truck from hydroboost to vacuum brakes. The brakes work super. He made brackets to mount the rad. Pretty sure it has the Dodge tranny crossmember. Dodge hydraulic clutch parts adapted to the Chevy pedal. Chevy dual tanks feed the Cummins transfer pump. That's all I can think of right now. If you have any more questions, I'll answer or ask him if I don't know. I really think I have the best of both worlds now - A Cummins in a Chevy. Had a '93 Dodge W250 club cab Cummins truck, my only Dodge after many Chevys, and sold it to get this one.

I use it as a daily driver and for pulling my 13,000 lbs. of gooseneck trailer with my Jeep, camper, etc. on it.
