Local 5 speed find questions?

There is a 1990 5 speed Chevy 4x4 trans listed on the local Craigslist. I am looking for some info. As near as I can tell, it may be a 5lm60? Are these transmissions easy to swap into an '87 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 with a 350/4 speed manual? Are they worth the effort? Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks
Tim

Re: Local 5 speed find questions?

The 5LM60 was only rated for 280-300ft/lb of torque. They're a complicated little SOB internally, even more than the NV3500, so if it needs any work I'd walk away.

The bellhousing pattern should be Chevrolet V8 unless it's really an NV1500 from a 2.8L S-10.

The 87 already has a hydraulic clutch so the only gotcha there will be a custom Master to Slave line.

The driveshaft length will probably need to be modified. The transmission crossmember will probably need to be re-located.

The 87 should have a NP208 transfer case. The NP208 should bolt up to the mount for the NP231.
If it's original your NP208 is set up for the late model 32spline SM465 or TH400. That would be great for a NV4500 swap but the 5LM60, NV3500 has a 27spline output like the TH350 and 700R4. So. You can either change the NP208 input gear and sleeve or swap in a transfer case out of a TH350 or 700R4 rig.

I'll pass on it. Although Im sure it wouldnt be too much to put it in if its in decent shap, I wasnt sure how light/heavy duty it was. I'll wait and see if an NV 4500 comes up eventually. Thanks for the info.
