Re: 396 Turbo Jet accelerator linkage
There is supposed to be a little metal piece, that attaches to the throttle linkage arm of the carb. It kinda looks like a flat piece of metal that was bent into a 90 degree angle. It pushes against the kickdown plunger. The other thing is your idle solenoid. When you turn on the A/C, the plunger pushes on your throttle arm to increase the idle speed, due to the extra load from the compressor.

Re: 396 Turbo Jet accelerator linkage
Heres a pic. The linkage looks somewhat different. Possible carb change in the past?

But the rod on mine is not the same as yours. The carb is a rebuild unit, my accelerator rod is the same as the one that board member too much stuff has on his 1969, 396. Mine is a 1968, what year is yours? |

Guys, I'm gonna move this to the '67-72 message board - that's a better place for it.

Re: 396 Turbo Jet accelerator linkage
I'd check to see that it's the right carb for your truck. I swapped in a new carb on the weekend and even though it was the exact same model number, it had a different throttle arm so I had to rig up something for it to work with my throttle linkage.
Over the years, people have changed manifolds and carbs. Mine should have had a 292 inline six with a two barrell carb. It had a '67 283 V8 in it with a quadrajet 4MV when I got it. That engine should have had a Rochester 2G but someone changed the intake manifold so it could have a 4BBL. I put another rebuilt quadrajet in but it was probably from a car instead of a truck so the linkage had to be modified. Good luck.
