Exclamation has anyone tried spray on bedliner on a fiberglass top?

I just picked up my first 2wd Jimmy and the top is in good condition but needs a little work. After talking to a fiberglass shop they told me they could not get the texture to match the rest of the top. My brain went to work from there. Has any tried to use a bed liner product to coat the outside of a fiberglass top? I have not talked to any shops to see if the product will stick to fiberglass or not. If it does work I would think it would protect the fiberglass. if anyone has tried this on knows it won't work let me know.
Thanks

Always considered it to be a decent idea but at the same time wondered about the weight it would add.

The tops are heavy enough and not knowing how much 'more' poundage the spray on would add, never looked into it past there.

May not even be an issue but that's my story...

The texture can be re-created with a stutz (or Schutz)? gun I've read. Search for BobbyKs write up of restoring his top, I believe that's were I read it.

IMHO I would not use spray on bedliner as it is made to never come off. If you ever did want to redo your top after that you may be in trouble.

I agree with VT, the added weight will suck. what about just having them smooth out the top after the repair and repaint either white or body color to match?

I did the whole body of my jeep wrangler with herculiner and I would not suggest it for your application. The biggest issue I think you will find is that it does not clean up well. The cracks, groves, pockets tend to trap dirt and never looks clean no matter how many sponges you grind through. Especially if you park under trees.

Re: has anyone tried spray on bedliner on a fiberglass top?

Smoothing the top is an option. I smoothed one on my old '86 K5 and it looked good on the sides, but the very top was wavy. The texture tends to hide the natural waviness of the fiberglass.

I wouldn't spray bedliner on it, because if you have to go back and make repair you will see an overlap of texture. Much like the texture overlap you sometimes see when patching drywall. Plus I can't imagine bedliner would be very fun to sand if you had to.

Al's Liner.....do it yourself kits.....supposed to be superior to the shop installed stuff and better uv resistance. you can tint it to match/compliment almost any color vehicle. i would not put it on a fiberglass top, but it is perfect for floorboard, running boards, undersides, wheel wells, frames....anything that will get abuse form road debris, winter salt spray, etc. and yes, poly bed liner is tough as nails.....so you gotta get it right on the first time. darn stuff will even absorb energy from a bomb blast!

I recreated the spotted texture on my top witha regular paint gun? I just set my gun to where it was sprayin globs of paint onto the top and i just textured it the best I could and then sprayed a nice satin black over it..
