Cab Gas Tank Mount removal ?

I was told the tank mounts can be removed and thrown away, and Id sure like to do that !

Looking for opinions on removal of these gas tank mounts inside the cab.

Don't need them any more and I'm wondering if they have any structural purpose to the rear cab,cab in general outside of just holding the tank?

Anyone ?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Cab Gas Tank Mount removal ?

I'm in on this one as well. Wondering also if someone used them to mount a cover of some sort to cover up the back of the cab.

Re: Cab Gas Tank Mount removal ?

The brackets are not structural, they are only both bolted and spot welded in to provide a secure place to mount the tank. If you would rather have them out there is no reason they need to be there.

Hey everyone, dont remove these mounts unless you are working with unfinished body work on the rear cab panel !
I now regret I ever did this.

I cut off the lower half that sticks out and left the part attached to the floor and the back of the cab.
I didn't see any reason to tear the whole thing out.

Its near impossible to remove these mounts without drilling through the back of the cab,as I soon found out.
One removed last night, when I calm down...Ill do the other.

Welding up holes in new body work.....,priceless.

Re: Cab Gas Tank Mount removal ?

Sorry to hear about your problem, were you using a drill bit or a spot weld cutter? I removed mine using a spot weld cutter and had no issue going through the cab.

Re: Cab Gas Tank Mount removal ?

just a related thought on this.... as I haven't cut mine yet, but...I'm planning on putting 2 small batteries there ( for better temperature/battery life, and weight distribution- using expensive DynaBatt's) as well as stereo amp, etc. Perhaps the tank mounts can be modified for this??

Re: Cab Gas Tank Mount removal ?

On the 65 trucks, there were 14 spotwelds along the upper portion of each mount.
I wouldn't know about earlier years,so with my experience I'm going to recommend not to do this after bodywork. I used a spot weld cutting bit and it cuts through the back of the panel...period.

The first mount removal sent me into orbit I was so pi$$ed off,so I walked away for a day.

The solution ...., drill into the mount spot's with the 5/8 spot cutting bit approximately 1/8 of an inch. Do the reminder of the cut with a 3/8 bit that has been ground flat on the end,so find an old bit to do this. You will have to sharpen it as it dulls after 2 or 3 spot weld completions.
Pay close attention to your depth, check often.Occasionally pull lightly on the bottom or top of the mount, this will break the spot free if you have drilled deep enough!

This procedure works well and does not cut through the back of the cab ! I wish I had figured this out before I started the job...,oh well...now you know !!

I just cut off. The tabs that stick out, they kinda seem like nice supports for the floor to back wall. They aren't really in the way.

Just the ends cut off....,that's where I was last week.I later talked to a member here that removed his entirely.
I saw a few pics of the job, it looked clean and finished so I decided to take mine out.
Now that I calmed down from the extra bodywork I have to do..,URG #@*! I'm glad I did it.

Cheers,
Ed.

I left mine thinking I could somehow use them to mount speakers on. I don't know if I ever will, but took the gamble.

Re: Cab Gas Tank Mount removal ?

well I was the guy that removed them and it took about ten minutes to get them out.. Ed feel free to post up the pics I sent you..There was not one spot weld on the lower parts of mine. I trimmed them maybe 1/2 under the bottom LEAVING the top part attached to the back wall , using a thin cut off wheel with the 4 1/2 grinder. And flipped the cab mount bolts over filled the extra hole... Man I am sorry to hear that it created extra work.. SORRY!!!

Anyway,I'm glad I did...it will when done and already now looks like a finished product.I didn't know how I was going to wrap carpet etc. around that garbage, now it will be a snap!
Ill give you a call sometime over the weekend.I appreciate all the help.

Cheers,
Ed.
