Question on Checking for VIN on Muncie 465

When one is looking for the VIN stamp on a Muncie 465 does the transmission have to be dropped? Looking at a spare 465 (now installed in the truck) can't see the VIN. Truck service manual indicates it is located on the rear face by the retainer plate.
Comments? Thanks in Advance. Larry

Re: Question on Checking for VIN on Muncie 465

I have never seen a VIN on a 465. Is it a factory manual, or something like a Chilton manual?

nonstop: Manual is GM/Chevrolet Service Manual for 1977 Chevrolet Pick Up trucks. AFAIK it was a federal and state mandate to put the VIN on the transmission by 1977. I'm sure it is on there somewhere but hard to see.

Wierd, I've never seen the vin on a manual transmission either. I've noticed it on some factory automatics but my built 200-4R didn't have any vin stamped either....
