Cool Best Muffler for a LSX?

Ready to put exhaust on my 5.3. Running Doug thorley headers. What are the best sounding muffler? Flowmaster original 40 series or magnaflows?

Re: Best Muffler for a LSX?

I have heard the MagnaFlow's are more mellow than the Flo's, if you want some noise then go with the Flowmaster's.

I have a set of turbo's on mine and they are plenty loud enough for me.

Re: Best Muffler for a LSX?

if you arent stuck on one of those two brands, then check out borla. I had a borla pro-xs on my '10 silvy 5.3 w/ long tubes and a magnaflow cat, and I loved it. It was the perfect amount of "raspy" on WOT and kind of mellow during just normal driving.

Re: Best Muffler for a LSX?

Just put TBSS long tubes and 2.5" mandrel SS exhaust on my 6.0L swap. Found some Borla Pro XS for $139 shipped. That is for the pair! 304L SS. Cannot beat the price.

LOVE the mufflers. I had Flowmaster 40 series on the truck right before the swap. 2.25" stock SBC with manifolds and the drone was obnoxious. Unless you're 17 you will hate 40s with headers and an LS. Get Borlas and never buy again. Quiet quiet quiet under 2700 rpm. Start to scream around 3k and at WOT it sounds like a pissed off V8 that is going to eat the asphalt. Perfect tone and volume for me. YMMV. I'm 23 btw and like some volume but this truck is to be a 3-4 days a week driver and occasional 200 mile trips so I agonized over the right muffler and I believe I found it.

Re: Best Muffler for a LSX?

I have Summit Turbo's that are the welded series on my S10 and I get a lot of complements about the sound. I have a H pipe and 2 1/2in. exhaust and I don't get any drone in the cab at highway speeds.

Re: Best Muffler for a LSX?

Another vote for the Borla Pro XS. The sound is perfect. I had one on my '08, single side exit. You didn't say what truck it was going on so I should add that the 07+ trucks have the worst drone of any trucks IMO. It was bad enough with the Borla Pro XS that my wife didn't like riding. On my second '08 I used a Dynomax VT which has a valve for quiet cruising. It sounded great, not perfect like the Borla...only a minor compromise but it had ZERO drone, as advertised.

Magnaflows sound great imo. I also like the corsa sport but it's pretty loud with long tubes

I think the drone is worse on trucks that have the displacement on demand. I have that on my 08 5.7 Hemi and when it kicks on 4 cylinder mode a loud muffler sounds like a helicopter droning overhead. I actually took the magnaflow off and went back to stock to kill that awful noise. On my 5.3 a dynomax sounds good at any speed, quiet as can be but still noticeably a V8. BUT my 5.3 doesn't use the DOD system so I don't get that chopper sound. With all the hype on the Borla mufflers I have to try them next time!

Re: Best Muffler for a LSX?

Magnaflows sound great, I have a true duals on mine with a cheap magnaflow. I have a few videos in my build thread. I think it'll sound a lot better after an h-pipe!!
Borlas with an h-pipe would probly sound great too.

Re: Best Muffler for a LSX?

Gotta agree with Wasted.

Think about how economical it is; not only are you making more power and technically making the engine more efficient, but you quiet it down as well.

MANY racing bodies and organizations qualify a Turbo the same as "any device in the exhaust pathway that quiets, baffles, or modifies the flow of the exhaust ".

Sounds good to me.

Re: Best Muffler for a LSX?

Ok for real though, I'm a big fan of Magnaflow stuff. Here's a few sounds clips of different LS stuff I built.

My 69 C-10 with a 5.3, shorty headers, 2.5" exhaust and Magnaflows

The Monte SS I built for my brother. Cammed LQ4, longtubes, 3" stainless dual exhaust with Magnaflows.

And of course my favorite...the "super turbo muffler" Blazer. Borg Warner S480 with a 4" downpipe and a 4" Dynomax race bullet.

Re: Best Muffler for a LSX?

Ok I just put 5.3 with procharger on my truck and had flowmasters. Just today I went down and had magnaflows put on and it was NIGHT AND DAY! So much better and a lot more horse power! It woke my truck up a lot!!!!

Re: Best Muffler for a LSX?

After doing some digging I think everyone needs to do some youtube research and check out Spintech mufflers. I listened to some GTO, Vette, and LS camaro clips and they sound awesome. On the website they say they can build any muffler to your specs if you have an odd fitment problem. I plan on getting the Sportsman 3000 when the time comes.
