72 Suburban rear A/C unit
Hi Guys, I need opinions!
My 72 A/C is all original. The fans work front and back, but the back fans are way to noisy! It needs some minor other work to get operational but I am thinking of getting rid of the rear unit (it’s so bulky) and buying/retrofitting a whole new updated A/C system. That means front air only! The question is whilst the new systems are great, would they cool the whole cabin?

I don’t have experience with a front only setup so I can’t comment on that. However, if your truck has been insulated well I would think that it would cool well.Hopefully others will chime in with real world info.

Re: 72 Suburban rear A/C unit
I have put new insulation everywhere, plus I very rarely use the back seats.

72 Dirty Rat, is your A/C unit roof mounted? I have a floor mounted unit listed in the for sale section with a picture. I don't know if the fans are the same or not.

Re: 72 Suburban rear A/C unit
I have an original front and rear A/C set up, although it was not operable when I purchased my truck. I replaced the front unit with a vintage air set up. I can assure you, it will not cool the entire truck. Its comfortable in the summer with the air blowing on you in the front, but the middle and rear does not get comfortable. Just too much glass and too much space. At some point I will attempt to either integrate the factory rear A/C with the vintage air, or replace it with a second vintage air system.

Re: 72 Suburban rear A/C unit
I've got dual vintage air on my '69 C20. Recently did LS swap and used stock compressor. works just fine. Winter I use rear heat because I don't like front vents blowing in my face with heater.

Re: 72 Suburban rear A/C unit
Thank you for all the replies! I ended up just pulling the rear system out, I will eventually get vintage air for the front, I really only need the front air anyways!👍👍

Re: 72 Suburban rear A/C unit
At least here in Texas - the 2nd and 3rd rows can become pretty warm for the boys. But my wife and I are comfortable with the front only Vintage air system :-)
I do, however, have a complete rear system that I plan to install this year some time to give them a break during our summer road trips. |

Re: 72 Suburban rear A/C unit
Previous owner bolted generic vintage air blower unit to roof then built box around it. Freon and wiring run down right rear corner thru floor and along frame to front.
