55.2-59 Performance Online Aluminum Tank Issue - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey All,

Quick query, I purchased a Performance Online aluminum fuel tank for my '56 SB. It has a 1 1/2" fuel filler tube out the top which is nicely centered in one of the bedboards, however, the filler cap that was included is 4" long not including the piece of fuel hose. When I put the bed board down, there's only 1" from the top of the tank tube and the bottom of the bed board. Bot a lot of room. There is no way the fuel filler cap will fit with out sticking up at least 3" or more. I've included a couple of photos. Any ideas as to what I'm supposed to do? The PO store has installation instructions, and I've used them, but they don't mention anything about cutting anything. If anyone has advise, I'd gladly accept it, thanks.

Further to my post, I have since found this on the site. I found it with the Google Chrome browser. Firefox didn't find it, nor this website, so it does take some ingenuity to find something here!

FYI, I just cut 1/2" off the tank tube and 1 1/4' off the filler neck/cap. Installed great. No room for error on wood holes though!

I'm going to say one needs to do pretty close to what SARBlade did on his.

You need enough of each tube to get the hose on sufficiently so that you can get a clamp solidly on it and get a tight seal. About the same as most radiator necks on late model radiators. Add in enough space between the ends of the filler tubes to have a tad of wiggle room, minimum of 1/4 to 1/2 inch.

THEN you have to figure out how to tighten the clamps and a kid with skinny hands and arms might come in real handy.

For tightening the hose clamps, the narrow board in the middle is not fastened down yet so it was easy to tighten the clamps. The hardest part of this exercise was keeping aluminum filings out of the tank while I zipped 1/2” off the top! I used painters tap. First put several strips down the tube, then put a couple sticky side up after that. Worked like a charm.

It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
