Lightbulb Shop Truck style work bed?

I ran across these old bedsides (only one pictured) and was thinking on making them into a SWB for my shop truck project.

Several things to point out:

I don't have a pic of both on it yet - that looks better

It's not centered side to side due to the lack of a tracking arm

It'll move an inch or 2 farther forward but still leaving a gap :/

I can cut out the inners to allow them to sit lower

I can add some sorda filler to make it fit closer to the back of the cab

What does the all mighty forum think?

Re: Shop Truck style work bed?

Those look very similar to the ones that were attached to the side of a stepside bed (with the steps and fenders removed.) Although, they look a little "tall" to have been the ones I'm thinking of?

I think it would look cool. You could probably "make" a stepside gate fit between them too.

That is awesome, I say go for it!

Definitely not something you see everyday. Would you keep the "used" look or repaint?

Re: Shop Truck style work bed?

Look at my list of trucks in my sig. I have a 67 chevy truck already with a utility bed on it. I don't get over to where the truck is parked or I would get a couple of pics.
So to answer the question , Do it!

Re: Shop Truck style work bed?

Why not see about having a gast tank made to be the filler in there instead of using an in-cab or under-bed tank. I've seen a lot of work trucks that have had tanks between the bed and cab.

Re: Shop Truck style work bed?

For what it's worth, I think the idea is an awesome one. It would be something that looks more unique and individual than a lot of things that have been posted on the board, and would be great to run to the shows, and have storage for the chairs, munchies and cooler. Filling that gap with a custom gas tank would be a cool idea, and you could probably come up with something to blend between the cab and bed nicely.

I think it would be cool! Different.

Is that truck a short bed already?

+ 1 on the gas tank to fill the void between the cab & bed. I like the idea.

Thumbs up Re: Shop Truck style work bed?

Now that is a great idea - take a stepside, strip the fenders and "graft" these sides on there instead. - That way, the gap issue is solved along with any BS mounting problems and the missing tailgate appears.

I'm keeping the gas tank inboard just for kicks. So bridging the gap with a tank would be overkill...

Another neat thing about the bed is I can hide the airtank, pump and all that caca in there without having to bother with it on the frame.

Thanks for the input everyone, keep the ideas coming if you have any.

Re: Shop Truck style work bed?

Why not cut a chunk out of the frame, guys do it all the time to make a longbed into a shortbed, you would just have a shorter short bed. Then your bed would look like it belonged to the truck and your not trying to fill a void with a gas tank, just my opinion.

Re: Shop Truck style work bed?

hahaha that's so weird. i have a buddy with a LB utility bed that i was gonna put on my LB 4x4.

i think it'll look awesome once finished. i saw cut the wheel well out and drop the bed down flush w/ the rockers. then take a small 2" piece of exhaust tubing or something similar and round off the top edge of the box to have it kinda match the contour of the body. then do something to blend into the cab infront of the box.

Re: Shop Truck style work bed?

That gap should be able to be fixed with a little bondo.

I like the gas tank idea, or make a utility box that will fit there. You can smoke stack that gap as well.

I like it, but I'd shorten the frame.

Re: Shop Truck style work bed?

I like the idea of taking a short section out of the frame except then you have to deal with the driveshaft being too long.

Re: Shop Truck style work bed?

Driveline shops like six States Distributors or Kansas City Driveline Service back home in MO can cut driveshafts rebalance them and press in new u joints for ya in a day or two, I imagine you gotta redo the brake lines too, I just think it would look alot cleaner shortening the frame instead of filling the void, Utility beds always remind me of when the Vet would come out to the farm when i was a kid, wierd huh...
