Help us ID this tool - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

About a year ago, a friend called me to come see him at a beer joint near my home to try to ID a wrench. When I saw it, I knew it was not a wrench, but couldn't tell what the hell it was.
Saturday at a Tool Sale and Swap meet in Houston, I saw the second one of these I have ever seen. A guy had bought it on Ebay 3 or 4 years before and didn't know what it was either. We passed it around to a bunch of tool collectors and got a lot of wild guesses.
I bought it and it has been posted on my forum- Tool Talk

Okay, I have two guesses.

1. It's a nut splitter
2. It used to perforate a nut onto a bolt, kind of like a lock nut.

I never thought of a nut splitter, that might be it. I will try that tomorrow.

at first I thought of a nut splitter too!

Looks like a tool that holds a die so you can make threads on a bolt.

One of my Tool Talk members says it is a tool for undercutting the mica insulators on a commutator after turning it. I don't see how it would do that since the cutter doesn't travel in a straight line, only in a short arc and only goes toward the center on the upstroke.

that is a lid opener on a 59 studebaker .. you use that to pop the cover so you can add blinker fluid or replace the muffler bearings

sort of looks like a pipe thread cutter or chaser// i'd think for cleaning up the threads of a well when changing pump heads

I have an idea of how to solve it, are there any patent numbers on it? If so look em up and you'll have an answer.

maybe some early form of a valve spring compressor? screws around the side of the valve and then press down the handle to compress it?

Early 19 century circumcision tool

its a thread chaser, stick the bolt thru the clamp area, snug it up the twist it around to clean the threads. Change the cutter bit for a diffrent pitch. Thats my best guess

I don't think it can be a thread chaser because the toothed cutter blade doesn't line up perpendicular to whatever you clamp in it, nor is it anywhere near the angle it would need to be to chase pipe threads, and how would you turn the tool if the pipe were clamped in it?
I appreciate the guesses, even the wild ones!

I haven't a clue what that contraption is but when you find out and tell us everyone is gonna say................Man i can't belive i didn't think of that!
