sell my 64 and buy a 68?

Ok my brother wants my 64 and it has a 3/4 drop on rally wheels, headers, all that. The 68 had same 350/350 combo runs good, but rockers are really rusty. Any input? The 68 will cost me $1800 and i can get $3500 for my 64... Try to post pics but I'm outta town...

I think the '68 in general is a better looking truck, but seeing as we can't see pics of either truck, it's pretty hard to decide between those two particular trucks. Rusty rockers are pretty common. I can see straight through to the ground on the drivers side of mine, but the other side is clean. Strange. They sell new rocker panel pieces for not too much. Hard to say how hard it would be to install, since I haven't done it

Re: sell my 64 and buy a 68?

I had the same problem. I really like both of them for different reasons. I have a 64 and when I found my 72, the owner liked my Subaru so much that we traded. Problem solved for me anyway. It depends on what you like. They are both easy to get parts for and not expensive mechanically. Rockers are not to bad to replace. If you are going for an original look, don't drill the spot welds on the front and rear in the door jamb. It is very hard to reproduce the factory spot weld look. What I have done in the past is cut them short and butt weld the new rocker in place. That way you have a new rocker and it looks like it is factory because the factory spots welds are still there. Hope that makes sense.

its not strange if you live in a state like minnesota, or any other state that uses salt on the roads during the winter. the driver side always rusts out way faster. I would suspect that your pickup spent some time in a state like minnesota.

Well, or Utah. We get plenty of salt on the roads here in the winter time

Re: sell my 64 and buy a 68?

salting roads has got to be one of the dumbest things there is. now you know why your drivers side rocker is rotted out. as far as the op. you already know what you really want and you just are curious what other people have to say, but no one here will sway your opinion. goodluck either way. I would sell and buy the 68 from what i see, but i personally dont like the older style.

Re: sell my 64 and buy a 68?

Good heads up on the rocker repairs. I won't be going for a 100% factory look, but hopefully the next truck I get will be a 67 shortbed, and I'll have enough money to go that route.
Here are a few pics of my 64, a couple are it wet while raining:

Here are the craigslist pics of the 68. My seat is in nicer shape, and mine has had most of the rust repaired, but it doesn't seem too bad on the 68 anyway, mainly floorpan and rockers.

Any more advice? Gotta say the 3/4 drop on my 64 with the wheel and tire combo looks a LOT better haha but after dealing with some of the rust, first thing I'd do is lower the 68, so not a big deal I guess...

Re: sell my 64 and buy a 68?

They're both beautiful trucks. If you do the same stuff to the '68 though, I think it'll beat the other truck out. Plus, it'll give you a new project that will be fun

Re: sell my 64 and buy a 68?

If its only rocker and floor pans I'd do it.. Check for fire wall rust on the top corners. If none there, and no rust on the doors then yes. For sure!

Edit: Also drip rails.. Check those too lol

Re: sell my 64 and buy a 68?

Well if only I had a ride back out there to buy it before someone else snaps it up! Fiancee is at work later than expected... Damn!

BTW drip rails were surprisingly clean overall, I think they had some filler squeezed in at some point, but they looked a lot better than my 64!

Why not call the guy, and tell him you'll take it? I bet he'll honor that, a long as he has cash in hand tomorrow or whatever.

Next item of business: change your username lol

Haha true! Yeah, I told him earlier that I'll take it, but until I have the keys and pink slip, anything can happen.

Man, I would, but I called him about 15 minutes ago, no answer. This isn't looking good. Somehow I always get flaked on using craigslist! Whether I'm selling or buying haha I'm keeping my fingers crossed, gonna call him back in about 15 when I can get a ride out there.

Yup, I mean worst case is I keep my 64... No big deal, but I did like this 68 and hope he didn't flake on me after I drove out there and spent a few hours of my day to check it out and whatnot.

Is he an older guy? He probably turns his phone off at 8PM, watches the local news, and goes to bed lol

Re: sell my 64 and buy a 68?

I would stick with the 64 but thats just me cause I am a 60-66 chevy truck guy at heart. But if you do get sell it atleast it is to your brother and there will always be another 60-66 out there. The 68 looks cool. Either way both are good trucks to work on.

Re: sell my 64 and buy a 68?

Hahaha well shoot, he was probably in his late 20's and said he'd be home at 7:30 so I could come back, but never answered the call or text message, so I'm not holding my breath. I'm hoping he gets in touch with me tomorrow though because I'd sure like to pick that truck up...

Re: sell my 64 and buy a 68?

Well, my brother wants to buy my 64 so at least I can still drive it when I'm in southern california... I'm moving up here to Sacramento, and figured it would be easier to start a new lil project than drag my poor truck up here. It might not like the rain haha if the 68 falls through, I'll bring my 64 up here.

Re: sell my 64 and buy a 68?

Now that I think about it isnt that 68 up on craigslist? Even if you dont get it there are so many in Socal to choose from that are around that price and driveable. If you do sell the 64 and buy a 67-72 you just cant go wrong.
