Drop Spindle question
I have a stock height 65 Suburban. 6 lug all the way around. I want to stay six lug, but want front disk. I have been scouting for 73-87 donor trucks to grab the control arms and spindles. But I also plan on getting drop spindles and springs. Here is my question. Is there a drawback to just ordering the "Conversion" spindles that bolt directly to my existing ball joints and tie rods? Then just buying rotors, calipers, brake lines at the parts store. I probably would have replaced the ones from a donor truck if I went that route. Except for rounding up small parts, ie washers and caliper bolts, wouldn't this route be cheaper since I plan on drop spindles anyways?

Re: Drop Spindle question
I never went to all the research on whether I could have saved a few dollars, just bought a kit from CPP, kit included everything including calipers, dust sheilds, bearings, calipers, spindles, and so on. It was worth it to me not have to be scrounging around for odd hardware that may not have been included when buying individual parts.

Re: Drop Spindle question
I have done it on both my trucks using the donor route. I rebuilt the front components and swapped them in. I added drop springs and drop spindles, the rotors you have to get aftermarket to stay 6 lug. Summit racing had the best price and service. Gave me everything I needed and came out good.

Everything bolted right up no problems!!,and i dont know how but i got lucky with my original 6 lug steel wheels clearing the calipers!!!!!!!!!!And they came off my 61 gmc!!! ....I did however change the tiny U bolts on the lower A arms that is a MUST!!!! and of course the master cylinder

Re: Drop Spindle question
I used this kit from CPP... I bought the upgraded version about 4 yrs. ago and at that time they offered the master cylinder with the kit.. This kit is great.. You have the option to keep 6 lugs or convert to 5.. i converted and chose 2.5 drop spindles.

Re: Drop Spindle question
That is the kit I bought from CPP, I went 6 lug, and 2.5" spindles, ordered the booster/MC/prop valve separately as kit from CPP as well.

Re: Drop Spindle question
CPP runs a lot of specials on Ebay . Also if you have CPP part numbers order from Summit its free shipping if you spend $100. CPP wanted about $100 to ship drop spindle kit and power booster combo.

To the original question, from what I was gathering info on, there are somewhere around at least three different ball joint sizes for the various years of trucks. I don't know if tie rod sizes changed. I can see how it could easily be a confusing mess when ordering spindles. I just ordered the complete Fatman front end. It has several advantages, with tubular a-arms and better ground clearance, while still being a completely bolt on kit. I am still about two weeks out on delivery, and then you will see a build thread. Last edited by wildearp; 11-07-2014 at 04:05 PM. |

Re: Drop Spindle question
is there any real benefit of staying with 6 lug over converting to 5 lug?
or is it only wheel preference? |

Re: Drop Spindle question
I did a McGaughy drop spindle kit on my truck from Summit. They offer 5 and 6 lug, and you don't need to change the master cylinder if you don't want to! The McGaughy kit is made to work with wheels as small as 15" I believe, so clearance shouldn't be an issue with it either. It wasn't that bad on pricing, $649 shipped and that included my rear springs, so probably about $550 for the brake/spindle kit

Re: Drop Spindle question
Another one of those questions that have me wondering about stuff.
I have a standard front end with 6 lug and drums up front, after redoing my suspension with 2" drop all the way around, I am now thinking that I want the front end a bit lower still.......... See here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...585901&page=24 So can I do it while keeping everything else in place without sacrificing ride quality and use ability?

Re: Drop Spindle question
Hey Rian! Not sure how I missed your build thread before, but I am subscribed now.
I can't answer the question, and someone may have the answer for you, but may I suggest that you contact CPP, or the like by email to see if their drop spindles will accept your drum spindles?
