Buying NOS?

So i have a deal in the works... Not sure if it will go through or not, but need some insight.

Long story short a friend who was once big into 67-72 trucks has cut his collection down to just one Pick up. However he supposedly has a huge pile of new GM certified parts. Evidently he went in the 80s and bought out stock from Chevy dealers through out WY, CO, S. Dakota, etc. and bought a ton of parts. He is looking to off load everything. I am not sure what he has other than his entire basement "full". He had an inventory list of everything that was printed when he moved the inventory from his old shop into the basement.

My questions for the board are:

1. What should I be looking for? What sort of things are rare or valued?

2. Are there items that have little worth?

Basically he collected the items because he was big into original parts and restoration. I will find out more in days to come.

Re: Buying NOS?

If you find any blazer specific parts, keep me in mind. I'm interested!

But to answer your question, I'd think that things that are easily damaged are more valuable (sheetmetal, emblems, glass, upholstery) and things that are built tough are less valuable (brackets, suspension parts, etc)

Re: Buying NOS?

Any fleet side tail gate would be very easy to flip. Front fender metal items and rear bedsides would be harder to sell but in demand also. Am/ Fm radios. Doubtful any true NOS parts would be that difficult to sell. I would stay away from inner fenders or wheel tubs. But even smaller items like lighter deletes, radio deletes plates, lighters, window n door cranks, and knob sets would turn very quickly.

Re: Buying NOS?

I could be wrong, but I am almost certain there is a difference between GM Certified and NOS. NOS would have been made using original dies, GM Certified was an aftermarket part that got the "OK" from GM so they put a special GM Certified sticker on it.
I could be all wet behind the ears, just going off of memory.

I do agree with that. Good mark sells gm certified sheet metal and it is nothing like the quality of NOS parts.

NOS Parts are the same as the parts that were installed on the car when it rolled down the assembly line.

Not saying these parts are not worth anything but remember a big difference in worth between NOS and GM certified.

Re: Buying NOS?

If you don't know your stuff, you probably shouldn't mess with it...unless you just want a few parts for your truck. What I mean is,with any investment you need to know your stuff.. Your best bet is to bring someone along who knows their 67-72 GM Truck N.O.S.

Any GM parts with a bar code are the same part as a GM certified part, which is reproduction, not N.O.S. But,if he truly bought the parts in the '80s they'll be N.O.S. because that was before reproduction and the GM Restoration Parts (repro) program,or any reproduction, for that matter

Re: Buying NOS?

Usually a good rule of thumb to price NOS parts is double the price of reproduction values. Some parts will vary like inner fenders will probably be less and something like a right front fender or tailgate might bring more. Pieces to look out for are sheet metal, chrome, upholstery, or parts for rare options like tach or tilt pieces. NOS is tricky but there is always a buyer for nice NOS parts for these trucks. If it truly is all GM original parts then it could be the deal of a lifetime. You have to take some pictures if you get a chance
