What year did they start with the white roof?

I just saw a 68 GMC with a white roof. I thought 70 was the first year they did that.

Re: What year did they start with the white roof?

Back in the days when A/C was an option and most vehicles came without it, people painted the roofs white to cool the cab down some. A lot of them were ordered that way.

Are you sure? 67-68 trucks used the 526 Ivory. In 69 they went to the 521 true white for the roofs.

My completely stock 68 had a white roof. I knew the man I bought it from ordered it that way. Thing to remember is that dealers sometimes would do this if the customer requested it.

If one does a google search on "67-72 truck original sales brochures" and clicks on images, you can find a lot of older trucks with this opton on them.

Pretty sure your truck has/had an Ivory (off-white) roof. Yes people would order a "white roof" conventional two-tone and it was common. My point was/is that the factory color used is Ivory (off-white) and not a true white. It was the same color used on the grills in 67-68 that were not silver or body color. The paint code on the SPID should identify a factory two-tone code. If in fact it was painted true white from the factory it would be a special paint truck and SPID code. In most cases to say that a 40 year old brochure image online is going to show the defining shade difference between a white or an ivory roof is a stretch without a reference object. Here are two pictures that show the Ivory shade well. Note on the ivory truck how everyhing is kind of blob like and there is no definition from the grill or bumper, yet the true white mirrors are clearly a bright white.

Now I'm not sure but it looked white to me.

I re-coated mine about 10 years ago with another coat of white and truck didn't have an spid. My buddy said his dad bent the door right after he got it and got a replacement. Guess I won't know for sure.

The 65 GMC I'm building for my little brother has a ivory or white roof. I think roofs were white or ivory in the 50's trucks also.

Re: What year did they start with the white roof?

The only two-tone available on Chevys till '67 was the roof in accent color. In '67 and newer it's referred to as Standard two-tone. The first two-tones were the Advance Designs
