Gas smell in cab

We went to a cruise in Saturday night about 15 miles from home. On the way I put about half tank of gas in truck. On the way home we start getting a fuel smell inside cab. Didn't last long since by the time we get home no more smell. Is there any way I could be getting a gas leak from tank. My tank is covered with carpet so I can't see anything. I am new to these and really don't know what to look for when I remove carpet.

Re: Gas smell in cab

Do you have a good seal on the fill tube where it comes through the cab? If not you could spill a little gas while filling the tank and it will run down the fill tube inside the cab. I need a new gasket/seal for my truck and it happened to me a couple times.
If this isn't the problem I would remove the carpet and check the tank for leaks.

Re: Gas smell in cab

Look at your gas cap for cracks in the gasket. It can stink you up pretty good from a small crack.

Yep checked the gas cap gasket and it is broke with a section missing. I can see where gas is running down outside of cab. I think gas is sloshing out from the cap and some is getting back in the cab thru the rubber grommet creating gas smell in cab. Sound logical to you guys?

Sure does. Replace the cap, but don't stop there. There are several small rubber hoses in the cab connecting the tank to various lines (depending on yr, etc.). The last time I had gas fumes in cab, I found a couple of those cracked and seeping raw fuel. I replaced them all; no fumes since then. There are also a couple hoses under the cab where lines from the tank connect to the lines on the frame leading forward to the pump, etc...
