Headers and Starters on 1969 BB engines

Hi gents, 69 BB, Hooker comp headers, Tuff Stuff mini starter:

Headers fit fine, but rear pipe touches the starter housing. I can't rotate towards the block or the solenoid contacts it.
Do I have this starter on upside down? Can I flip this over - and will the housing clear? Any experience with this would help. I have an inquiry in to both companies, waiting for a response.
I'll buy another starter if necessary.......

Cheers,
Ron

Tried a Powermaster starter today, did clear the headers but only by 1/2 inch.
How much clearance did the DB Elec give you? I may order it from ebay (not available here in Canada).

Re: Headers and Starters on 1969 BB engines

not exactly sure on the clearance dimension.. (it was a couple years ago) but I think it was more than 1/2 inch. (I have Doug throrley Tri-y headers on it)
Is this the powermaster you have?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PowerMAX-Che...item588e6d65b6

If so it is essentially the same as the DB I have.. Most of these I have seen are just a clone of an OEM GM starter from 1994 and up.. I bought the DB because it was less costly than my local auto parts store for a rebuilt one

So, to be clear, you upgraded to a mini hi-torque starter, and that fixed the problem? What about hot starts? Any issues there?

Parts guy gave me powermaster 9600
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Powermaster-...item564875e3bf

The top of this is quite large, but this is a "clockable" starter, so if I rotate
towards the engine I get roughly 1/2 inch clearance. If I trimmed the end off
the inside bolt, and machined a little from the front of the housing (at the top) I could gain 1/2 inch more. PITA. $192 Canadian too.
I can get the DB for $110 - but it won't be returnable. I'm really inclined to go this way simple because you and weircc have done it.

Question 2: This is a straight mount bolt pattern. Do these engines support
a staggered mount (the Db is a staggered mount) - I do see another bolt hole
in the block.....

Re: Headers and Starters on 1969 BB engines

the powermaster is probably for both 168 and 153 tooth flywheels and the db is 168 only and why isnt the db returnable? you will have to pay shipping but its returnable. try contacting them directly they have a website they may give you better deal not going through evilbay

Re: Headers and Starters on 1969 BB engines

For future dealings you can use a gm pgm starter under # 6449 make sure you ask for the shorter bolts that go with it. In michigan they sell for $110.00
last I checked. It is the same starter that powermaster sells under #9200
for much more. Yes it cleared my hooker super comps.

Re: Headers and Starters on 1969 BB engines

[QUOTE=weircc;
Ordered the DB electric via ebay, had it in four days (just north of Calgary, Alberta Canada). Even with shipping was less than the powermaster, which I have a $213.00 credit for. Plan to spend it on heat shield. Lots of header clearance, now re-routing the brake lines ha ha. One step forward, 2 back.
Thanks all.
Ron

PS Anyone add an additional trans cooler?? Nows the time....
