What am I missing? Turns over but won't start.

Finally got around to workin on my truck. Had the heads worked on and put everything back together. Went to turn the key and that's when the fun began...

It turns over but won't even think about starting. It spurts gas up through the carb and I did get it to backfire once through the carb. Kept playing with the timing but nothing.

Took the battery up and he said its good. 12v and 800ca. Replaced Holley with an Edelbrock 1406, new fuel pump, distributor cap and rotor, wires and plugs.

I believe there's fire in the wires cause I put a timing light on it and when it was turned over, the light came on. Also checked for 12v at the battery plug in on distributor.

Any ideas?

Fouled plugs? Check drop dead center and reset only thing I could think of.

Over tightened the valves? The valves could be held open.

Plugs are new. Guess I could pull one and see. Might as well check the gap. There's a good chance I screwed up the valves when I put the rockers back on. I used the EOIC? Or EIOC method. Maybe I should loosen them up and see?

Chances are you're 180 out and the distributor needs to be put back in after turning the crank 360.

Franken - I tried to make dang sure I put it back in the same way it came out. Did one way and the rotor pointed toward the back. Rotated again and it was around the 5' o'clock position.

X2. Not even an attempt to start plus backfire up the carb is usually 180 out.

The distributor turns once every two crankshaft turns. You need to make sure the distributor is at the #1 position when the #1 piston is at TDC *AND* the valves are both closed. At the other TDC position, both valves are open a bit.

So lets say I'm 180 out. What's ya'll's best way to fix it? If I line my mark up on my timing tab, the rotor points to around 5'oclock. Sounds like maybe, get to that point, pull distributor up, rotate 360 and restab?

Pull the distributor up, rotate the rotor 180*, stab it back. Should drop right back into the oil pump drive, because that's a slot.
