72 rearview mirror placement

Everything I have read has told me that in 1972 chevy started putting the rearview mirror on the windshield.....
But my 72 mounts on the roof, like the earlier models. A friend of mine also has a 72 that mounts to the roof.....

What gives? Did someone retro fit an earlier mirror mount on both of these trucks? Or is this just one of the many times that the factory just used the left over parts that they had from the previous year?

I know that it's not really important...but I'm curious.

Does the cab actually have a flat spot to mount the mirror to?

Ya...it looks just like the 71 I used to own. I just don't get it.....my truck has all the original markings in and around the cab. If some one did a cab swap, they did a damn good job. All the paint is old, faded, and matches the rest of the truck, protecto plate and trim tag in glovebox match......????

Anybody know where to find another VIN tag(besides the one on the dash) on the cab? Or anywhere else on the truck? Looks like I got some research to do....

My 72 cab doesn't have the pad to mount the mirror to. Gm did some funny things, maybe yours was built with a leftover 71 cab?

Check the frame# will be on top of the frame by the steering box clean it off with some fine grit sandpaper and wipe with a rag. It will be stamped in the frame. It should be 9 digits the first digit will be the year a 2 for 1972 or a 1 for 1971 the next 8 digits will be the last 8 of the VIN #. One other thing to look for is the cargo light on back of the cab it was only on 1972 models I believe.

Nope - my '71 has one and it's all original.

Never have seen an original 1972 cab with an older style mounted rear view mirror but it's possible I guess if it was an extremely early built '72 model. GM might have just used up the older cabs after the model change.

71 should have a raised mount to put the mirror on, 67-70 is flat, with 71 being a one year raised mount. if your 72 is raised, i have nfc what is going on.. if it is flat, then it sounds to me like the glued on one fell off and one was bolted to the cab

pic 1 is 70, pic 2 is 67, pic 3 is 69, pic 4 is 71, look really closely between the visors on the 71 pic and you can see part of the raised mount

My old '71 had a cargo light....but my '72 does not...

I will check the frame for a vin later today

It's not like having a rare exception on this truck would be wierd....all the other odd options it has still baffle me. PB, PS, ac, tach and gauges, th400, 402 bb, sliding glass, and the truck is a cheyenne with an exterior trim delete, but they kept all the nice interior......

After all of the muscle cars I have owned you would think that I would be used to the factories weird options, but this kinda has me stumped....

My '72 has the roof-mounted mirror as well. It's actually the chrome one found in the '68s. My cab VIN matches the frame, BTW.
As a GM employee, I can tell you that the General isn't too picky in how they separate next year's model from this year's. When there isn't any major design changes, they just pick a random car/truck, and say "Okay, that's the first '06 model.", for example. Every car before it is still an '05, and every car after it is an '06.
I should note that this falls right in line with our unofficial company motto: "If it makes sense, we don't do it."
