Rap the round trunnion in electrical tape. Cheap easy fix that works! Or just buy new trunnions.

Re: jiggly rattley tailgate

I have a fix,
1958-1966 Truck Fleetside Tailgate, Ultimate hinge Trunnion (2 Piece Set) made of Stainless Steel and Delrin.
These are replacement hinge trunnion parts to upgrade your chevy fleetside truck.
These are perfect for the truck restorer!

These are Very quite while opening and closing the tailgate.
You have to reused your original Trunnion hinge plate/bracket as seen in the pictures. Just remove the bolt with lock washer, replace with these stainless steel hinge trunnions and bolt back on your truck.

I recommend power coating or chrome your Trunnion hinge plate before installing these back on it. To prevent further rusting.

I also offer a cheaper version, Made of all Stainless steel on this listing:

I also in the works on building 67-72 trunnion hinges.

Re: jiggly rattley tailgate

Good Morning, Great idea for an aftermarket part. Except the original poster needs them for an '85. I believe the 73-87 pick-ups use two different styles.
I'd buy a set if they fit my '77. Also make the brackets as well and sell them as a set.

God bless, Terry

Re: jiggly rattley tailgate

Wish you had them for a 1974 Fleetside... I need some, but looks like I have to go OEM.

Re: jiggly rattley tailgate

I have had 3 squares and never noticed a lot of noise from the tailgate, unless the parts were worn and the latches on the sides were not full engaged. I would check the operation of your latches to make sure that they are tight. I don't think the trunions are usually a noise culuprit, unless they are damaged. I have seen lots of good taligate hardware at the junkyards which would be my first choice for a cheap fix. I guess if you drive on a lot of washboard roads you will hear some noise back there, but normally it should not be a problem.

Re: jiggly rattley tailgate

There is a certain amount of adjustability in the locking mechanism; the part that the latch of the tailgate "hooks" onto on the bed.
Loosen the bolts up just enough so you can move them with a small amount of force.
I got tired of messing with mine so I now have to lift the handle to shut the tailgate, but when it is shut, it is tight.
if you are more an_ _ retentive then myself you could find a "just right" spot between having to lift the handle to shut the tailgate, and just pushing it shut I would think?

Re: jiggly rattley tailgate

In my experience it has been the links that rattle not the latches themselves but I here it more because I have run pickup tailgates on all of my blazers so I can here the noise more clearly

Re: jiggly rattley tailgate

I've had some bad rattles on my truck but I couldn't imagine how annoying a tailgate could be ha I would replace all the bushings. I had taken mine off for the canopy and the rubber was toast
