Pivet rivet question - - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Is the replacement pivet rivet for the wind wing one piece or two? If you look at the original, it looks to be a smaller rivet pressed into a larger one.* Is it just a matter of taking the one-piece rivet and pounding on it so that the edges curl up and hold it in the hole??

I think the replacements are the same as the originals, they have a hollow center on one end, and a special tool that will curl the edges over when you use a hammer to flatten it.

The pivot rivet is larger than the others,, and mine was chrome..

Does anyone here know where to get the tool? I know you can buy the rivets from LMC, brothers etc but they don't offer the tool to install them. Will a stand rivet tool work?

Brothers sells the complete kit, with the tool as well.

Yeah, and so does LMC - it does include the tool, IIRC. I think that's where I got mine.

If you have not already removed the pivot rivet, try this. Remove the 2 rivets that hold the hinge to the frame, and just replace those instead with a pop rivet gun. This is WAY easier than trying to replace the pivot rivet. You will look like a monkey f-ing a football trying to install the pivot rivet with a hammer. If you have already removed the pivot rivet, the best way to install one is to lay the frame flat across a vice, and use the vise to have the tool "press" the rivet on. You will get it on there a lot tighter, and lessen the chance of breaking the glass this way. If you use a hammer, you will not be able to hit it hard enough to flatten the rivet without breaking the glass. Also, it helps if you grind the circular edge down on the tool, so that it can seat the rivet better. If you look in FAQ, that process is described. I also used a pop rivet gun/pop rivets from Lowes for all the other rivets that hold the seals in place (far easier that way) I have done it this way on both of my trucks and it saves a lot of headaches.
