making progress
Here is a before and after of some slots that I got from msgross a couple of weeks ago. 1 down 3 to go. I sanded them with 180 and stepped up to 1000 grit and hit it with the powerball. One more final polish and it will be done.

Here are my faithful assistants. Everytime I open this garage, they go nuts because they think we are going for a ride. 6 yr old lab "Shelby" and 2 yr old vizsla "Brandy".

Nice job on the rims, that shows what a bit of elbow grease will do.
And that's a good looking pair of sidekicks you have there. Harley my Aussie figures that every time I leave the house and don't have my work uniform on he is supposed to be in the truck with me. |

I messed around trying different things for a while, but once I decided to get aggressive it probably took about 4-5 hrs per wheel. I sandblasted the backs first, and the went 180,320,1000 wet, then the powerball. I have one other one about half done, and I'm thinking about using 800 or something between 320 and 1000, it is a pretty big step down in grit. But they were pretty pitted, if you had some that weren't, 1000 or 1500 wet would probably be enough.

Was that sanded by hand - I thought that you couldn't use sandpaper on these as they would leave scratches in the finish...
I got a set I plan on using on my Dad's truck...they look like the before pic right now. What do you need to do when they are done to keep them nice - zoop seal, clear powder coating? |

Yep I sanded it all by hand. I used automotive sandpaper. I have a little stool with a round seat that rotates. Set the rim on that and it made life a lot easier. Each step up in grit knocks down the scratches from the previuos grit. They keep getting finer with each pass, then the polisher knocks down the fine scratches. I know a lot of people use Zoop and have good luck with it. Mothers polish seems to have a wax-like effect. Water beads right off. Also I don't drive it in the rain.
