1964 disc brake swap

Stock brakes need work...time to swap to front discs?

Searched and found some info. lolife99 did a Great job of writing up all kinds of swaps...so much I can't sort it all.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=443845

I have:
stock 1964 C-10. Stock brakes, spindles, cross member etc.

Donor vehicle, no cost: stock complete 1984 C-10.

Want "simple" bolt on power disc brake system with stock spindle height and stock 6 lug wheels on 64 C10 will add new master cylinder, flex line, proportioning valve. Cheap, Need safety first.

Is there an "easy" swap or other donor vehicle (Camero brakes on Mustangs etc) to find?

Can't afford entire kit such as Early Classic Enterprises ($900).

Re: 1964 disc brake swap

im doing one now and i wanted to keep six lug, which the only aftermarket rotor i know they make 6 lug requires a 1 1/4 rotor. which i believed was used from 72-80 and on some hd 's after. I used the spindles and steering linkage from the 1975 i am changing the ball joints to the donor year. i wish i would have swapped the whole front assembly k member from the 75 it would have been easier.

Re: 1964 disc brake swap

My understanding is that with new spindles you should be able to use 71-86 rotors and calibers.

Just dont quote me on this as I'm new and haven't done it, yet. I opted for the full McGaughy's spindle and disc conversion kit which was just under 600

(I see the only usable parts from a donor,... as the centerlinks and the spindle. Everything else needs to be NEW)

I know my write-up is long and lengthy,... but I tried to cover all the bases.
For YOUR truck,...
Do you plan on rebuilding any of the 1984 donor components?
(balljoints, tie rods, cross shaft bushings?)
If not,... I would recommend it.

Or rebuild your 64 a-arms and steering and buy 63-70 conversion spindles.
These are available in stock height or 2.5" drop.
The best thing is, they are a direct bolt on to your 64 suspension.
You could then rob the brake rotors and calipers from your 1984 donor truck.
Personally I see no need to re-use wore out parts and would buy all new rotors, calipers, and bearings from a parts store locally.
(the only re-usable parts, in my opinion,... would be the spindles, centerlink, and dust shields.)

IF you are bent on using the 1984 stuff the way it is:
1) use everthing from the a-arms out.
2) use all of the 1984 steering linkage.
3) get a Captain fab master cylinder bracket and use the M/C that he recommends.
4) use a 71-87 prop valve or aftermarket equivalent.

Good luck.

You can buy aftermarket 6-lug rotors for your 1984 front spindles.
But stock 6-lug pre-71 wheels will not clear the calipers.
(unless you want to run a spacer)
71-87 4x4 steel wheels will clear the disc brake caliper.

Re: 1964 disc brake swap

lolife99, I read your thread and found lots of good information as well. Some would say too much but sorting through it all helped me a bunch. I have a 66 and my donor is an 83 1/2 ton. I still have to scavenge a steering pump and pulleys but otherwise it is a complete front end. I also plan on staying 6 lug so I can use either the mid 70's ralley's that I have or the chromed steels with baby moons that a friend gave me. Did I see correctly that the 1 1/4 discs are only pre-80? I had planned on getting the 6lug rotors from CCP to complete the swap. I will rebuild with the appropriate parts as needed. Thanks in advance.

I think pre-1981 is a good guarantee that you will find 1-1/4" 5-lug rotors.
AFTER 1980 you could have had either 1" light duty rotors or 1-1/4" HD rotors.
Just depends on how the truck was equipped.
Another source is 2wd blazers up to 1982 and 2wd suburbans up to the 1991 model year.

The driving force behind my original thread was to put the info out there.
There are many scenarios,... and you need to choose the one that is correct for your year of truck and year of suspension.
In this case,... it would be the 63-66 truck with 73-87 suspension section.
The very end of my thread just breaks down the parts by year,... so you can see what year parts interchange.

Re: 1964 disc brake swap

Keep in mind you might not be able to use your stock wheels as they may not clear the calipers.

I concur, this forum is invaluable to anyone working on a 60-66 Chevy or GMC. So much knowledge and people that are willing to take the time to explain.
