I'm sick of smelling like gas

I've replaced the gasket and ring on the tank, I've changed the gas cap. Ive taken the seat out and can't for the life of me find a leak in the tank.

I've bought a replacement tank and want to do a sidemarker fill but I can't find anyone that will do the filler neck work (I don't have tools, know how, space or time to do it). I can do the tank and hook everything up

What can I do to not smell like gas? My perfectly good running truck just sits because I can't smell like gas at work

Re: I'm sick of smelling like gas

Seems like there got to be someone in Atlanta or close to there that can do that for you. Check or advertise on Craigs list???

If you absolutely can't find anyone that can do the filler neck work, look into getting the kits and learn to do some of it yourself. You'll be needing the know how later on if you keep the truck or maybe get another one. Part of the fun of owning these old trucks is the satisfaction of DIY work.

Re: I'm sick of smelling like gas

For what it's worth, I know the reason mine reeks of gas is the actual sending unit leaks around the base of the tube. I assumed that the leak was coming from the ring and seal, but when I went to replace those it then became evident that the actual leak was coming at the tube.

I don't know if that helps any but figured I'd throw the idea out there.

Re: I'm sick of smelling like gas

Also check under the hood. Maybe you got a leak under there. I always smell leaks in that short piece of hose by the fuel pump long before I see any spots on the driveway or in the garage.

Re: I'm sick of smelling like gas

Remember that gasoline vaporizes much quicker than water. As such, it will be very hard to find a tiny leak because the gasoline will not puddle, it will immediately turn to vapor. I would replace the sender unit and use another new o-ring. Also, check all rubber and hard lines for smells. Next, check under the hood paying particular attention to the fuel pump since it has a diaphragm in it that can leak. It may be that the origin of the smell is under the hood and it just makes its way into the cab through the firewall or the cowl.

Re: I'm sick of smelling like gas

Before I took my truck apart, I thought that it was piece between the filler hole and the top of the tank. Now, I know that the filler neck is part of the tank, so that couldn't be the problem. I always smelled gasoline right after I filled up, so I quit filling it and stopped after 10 gallons. Didn't seem to be an issue after that. I'm thinking about putting in a tank in the back, in place of the spare. Yeah, that oughta do the trick.....

Re: I'm sick of smelling like gas

Same problem here...looked for weeks to find the source and to no avail...at last, I read a post on here about a week or so ago that talked about the top of the filler tube...where the gas cap screws on, and how those can go bad...

My tank, when I fell up, will actually drip gasoline down the side of the truck...even after 3 new gas caps...locking, non locking, vented, etc....someone said that it's the top of the filler neck, where your cap connects to the neck. I think the only way to fix it is get a new tank, and when I do that, I'll be getting my tank outta the cab!!!!!

Re: I'm sick of smelling like gas

every pick up I've had leaked where the filler goes into the tank, on the bottom side of the tube.
Call some radiator shops and see what they'd charge to flush and test an old tank, and then ask what small repairs would cost on top of that fee.
it isn't that much.

Good call. Makes sense, too. The tank is out, so getting that filler neck checked out for any possible failure of integrity, will be done.

Re: I'm sick of smelling like gas

There is an old Radiator shop in Hapeville that can do the testin of the tank for you and they will braze the tube on the sending unit if its the culprit. If you really want to move the tank i can find someone that will do it for you. Send me a pm and we can exchange info.

Re: I'm sick of smelling like gas

Is it actually leaking and the level in the tank goes down or is it just fumes?

If you have the tank that has the tubes on the right side that loop up into the back right side of the cab, they smay be missing, cracked, and/or leaking fumes there. I think it was 71-72 they did that, not sure about 1970.

I had one where a P.O. who removed that and tried to plug it but it just reaked with gas in the cab until I fixed it right.

Is the tank venting? What are you driving these days.I haven`t seen you here for awhile and don`t know what you have.I`ve never had this problem in any of my trucks, but I know bad venting will cause a fumey smell.

Check to make sure your evaporative recovery hoses aren't loose or cracked if you have them.

Re: I'm sick of smelling like gas

stingray72, not sure what year truck you have but........

my 68 always smelled like gas , but my 71 doesn't. The difference is that my 71 has a vapor line that goes from the tank loops up into the roof pillar then exits back out of the floor of the truck to the engine compartment, my 68 does not have this. You may want to check if you have that, if not maybe you can retrofit one. I think it makes a difference with the gas smell.

Stingray, I'm in Douglasville and can help if you want to install a Blazer tank conversion- I did mine and its great-I think this is the best bang for the buck mod for our trucks- the tank install is easy, the more difficult part is how you locate the filler-pm if you want to talk about it- chuck

Re: I'm sick of smelling like gas

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I"m going to pull the seat this weekend and check around the neck etc to see if I can find anything

Chuck, thanks for the offer. I'll let you know. I've done the tank before but I want the filler to be in the sidemarker light and I don't have the know how to get that done

BTW.. I've been driving my wife's old Mazda MX6 for 8 months while the truck has been parked. Talk about suck

Re: I'm sick of smelling like gas

any good automotive shop will have an EVAP system smoke tester. see if you can get someone to hook it up and where you see smoke.....there be the leak. i use a smoke tester to find EVAP leaks, intake vacuum leaks, exhaust leaks, etc. companies like wind doctor & water doctor, use them to find leaks from windshields and such. just a thought.

Re: I'm sick of smelling like gas

If you're using a new gas cap its probably pressurizing your tank. I think all new caps are required to hold 3psi in the tank. The old ones just vented. With a new cap on mine the inside of the truck always smelled like gas.. and releasing the cap would blow it off in your hand. After checking a bunch of them, i ended up drilling the vent in my cap.

Re: I'm sick of smelling like gas

Update:

I don't smell like gas anymore

Tanks has been relocated and truck is running off new poly tank from GMCPauls. Filler location is set and work is done and bed will likely go back on today provided I can find a coupling to go from a 1-1/2" ID to a 1-1/4"
