1987 C10 SWB Project "Name to be decided"

I searched the far reaches of Oklahoma to find a good project truck, and came across this beauty!

She's a 1987 silverado with the original tbi 350 in it. It currently leaks a lot of oil and has a bad exhaust leak. TV cable needs to be adjusted and there is a loud noise in the front suspension.
It drove home from Norman without a hitch, but by the time I got home, the fan clutch was "TOAST"! I'll dig in and find out what all i'm dealing with tonight as well as snap some pics.
The plan (subject to change) is to get this old tbi 350 daily drive worthy, drop it 5/7, and paint.
On a BUDGET of course!

Thanks EightiesOnly! Right now, swap the clutch fan, fix the leaks, and find out what the clanking noise is. Basically just get it drive-able. I'll worry about aesthetics later lol

Re: 1987 C10 SWB Project "Name to be decided"

So last night I found all the reallybad spots on the body and discovered what was making the awful noise!

It's difficult to tell in the picture but the shock mount broke and the dude kept driving it to the point that it's wallered out a half inch on each side.
Should be a fun fix! (sarcasm)

The interior is okay

Odd place for a rust hole on passenger bed side

and both cab corners but luckily the rockers are both fine!

I didn't get much of anything done last night, but should get some work done soon and have a good update!

Re: 1987 C10 SWB Project "Name to be decided"

Looks like a good start.

I suspect that odd rust hole is the result of a drilled hole in the box; some models and model years had a clip in that area to help retain the adhesive molding. I'd be willing to bet that's how that spot got started.

Last thing: not to be a "pedant", or anything but techncially your truck is an "R10". If it was an '86 model then C10 would be correct but the full size truck had already transitioned to the R/V designation for '87 to avoid confusion with the new GMT400 models (new in 1988).

If I'm ordering parts and I don't figure the counter guy is that familiar with our trucks then I'll lie and tell him mine is an '86 C10. Probably nobody other than you, me and a couple guys on this board would know otherwise.

Re: 1987 C10 SWB Project "Name to be decided"

Yeah Keith that's probably what caused the rust.
I noticed it is an r10 on the title. Kinda like an asterisk to me lol since I want a "c10" but I guess I'll get used to it!

That is "CRAZY" What is your plan to repair the frame on your R-10?

I think I'll end up cutting and drilling a patch for the hole, then welding a plate on the inside of the frame for extra strength. Boardmember Whiskey_marc suggested this fix.

P-DAWG got his valve cover gaskets changed to brand new ones last night. Progress is progress...

Looks like a solid project. That valve cover is not from a 87. It should have center bolts instead of perimeter bolts. How long did it take you remove those those ugly wheels? Lol. When I bought my 85 it had some hideous wheels on it and I couldn't wait to get it home and put Rallys on it.

yeah I agree!! I've been searching for set. We're thinking maybe the engine has been rebuilt.
