need a socket size please

What is the size of the pinion nut on a 71 C-20 2wd with a Corporate rearend? This is a 3/4 ton Longhorn.
My parts book suggests 1 5/16" and the only rear end that I have to measure is a 3/4 ton 4x4 and it measures 1 5/8".
I am needing the correct socket size and pinion seal # ASAP.

Pinion nut for the 10 bolt is 1-5/8". It has to be a thin wall socket, an impact socket won't fit into the trunnion.

Having a little discussion with the local dealer. He says all Longhorns were Dana equipt. I do not think so.

From what I remember the 10 bolt cover is the HO52/72. 12 bolt cover is Dana.

Fred, you are correct. I have all the pics and ammo needed to go back to the dealer now. He is a kid that I grew up with, (much younger than me though) and knows everything, if you know what I mean. He had a 66 Camper Special and so all Campers and Longhorns had Danas based on his experience. His exact words, "If you can put lube in through the cover hole, it is a Dana." I tried to explain that the cover is round and a Dana cover is egg shaped with flatter lines. Eaton is 10 bolt and Dana 12. He says I am crazy. Maybe I am crazy but crazy right. I was searching for a gasket and pinion seal. Thanks for your help.

Just in case you need them. Fel-pro gasket number for the HO52.
Differential Cover RDS5088
Pinion Seal 411330N
Pinion Repair Sleeve 99259
Axle Seals 2081

If you haven't had one apart you need to be ready for a tight nut. It was installed with around 200 ft-lb of torque. I use a 3/4" drive impact gun. If you don't have that luxury, a big pipe wrench with a cheater to hold the trunnion, turned against the frame. And a cheater for the nut. Sometimes you also have to heat the nut, propane torch will work.

Before you loosen the nut, mark the nut and pinion shaft end with a center punch. Then count the turns so you can return the nut to the same position. That way you don't have to reset the pre-load on the bearing. Also don't forget to check the housing vent. If it's plugged, you will blow out another seal before long.

As you can tell I've done this a few times. The HO52 was used from 1948-1972.

One thing I forgot. When you put it back together, use anti-sieze compound on the pinion threads and shaft. The stuff makes a nasty mess when you get it where it shouldn 't be, but the next time you have to take it apart you will be happy you used it.

No first I'm going to try it with the existing one,
and maybe putting in one of these:

If that doesn't work than I will want a different prop. valve.

Today we did the driverside. All I need now is two new brake hoses.
When I bought the calipers the guy said I could use the existing plumbing.
I forgot about the different connector for a disc caliper, so now I have to get some new hoses for disc calipers.
I hope to get them tomorrow.
I'll keep you updated on the progress.
