What kind of oil?

Recently bought a 87 K30 with a 454 and 4 speed, motor has 141000 miles with no smoke. What type and grade of oil do you suggest? Iv'e always used Castrol with no problems.

mobile one is the ONLY way to go, all of nascar uses it, and its the only true synthetic, the "high millage" oil just has makes your gaskest swell up so yes it will stop leaking for a while but it only huts it in the long run, but what ever u use don't use royal purple, if u mix royal purple and water, u get a wonder full thing called hydrocloric acid...that equals bad

Chevron Delo 400 is pretty good and doesn't cost 6.50 quart. I use it and have had no problems with it at all. Technically it is not a synthetic but its pretty close and the price is pretty good for what you getting.

If I was running nothing but synthetic and I had real deep pockets I would use Amsoil.

DITTO!!!! Delo 400 is great oil. It's made for diesels but works great in ours. With the diesels having to run so much higher compression the oil has to be much cleaner than gas engines. It's the best I've tried and I'm not spending the money for Mobil 1.

I always run white bottle valvoline 10W-40 with ac delco pf35 filters


Exscuse me they quit making that one now its the 1218S has some kinda oil bypass valve so it wont bleed down when you shut the engine off.

The 1218 has an anti drainback valve........not a bypass valve.

Mobil 1 is not the only true synthetic on the market. It is the most common true synthetic available over the counter. Royal Purple does not contain chlorinated parrafins that produce hydrochloric acid. RP is a top tier synthetic, that works very well in many applications. They produce two lines.......the API approved "street" oil is a synthetic that uses conventional oil as the carrier for the additive package......much like mobil 1 used to do. RP's "racing" oil is a 100% synthetic.

As far as oil recommendation. IMO BBC's like 40 weights. I would recommend delo 400, delvac 1300s, or pennzoil longlife 15w40's. The delvac 1300s would get my vote for cold weather use, as it is actually a 10w40. They call it a 15w40 so as not to confuse people who are looking for a 15w40 HDEO for their diesel engines.

Here is a recent study, that goes into much more detail than Russ's original study. By the way.......Russ claims to only use supertech filters now. This study was done on PF1218 equivalents.

recently talking to my dad who is a CLS(certified lubrication specilalist) this is what he says about oils.

It may be true that royal purple does not have chlorinated parrafins, however, it does have chlorinated hydrocarbons, and heavy metals such as Boran. Which are hazardous materials to the EPA. It is not true that royal purple is a true synthetic, its merly a blend. That is proved by the viscosity index. Royal Purples viscosity index is 110, the lowest viscosity index of a true synthetic(polyalphaolyphin PAO) is 140. THere fore it is not possible for Royal Purple to be a 100% PAO. Oh by the way, ROyal Purple will not tell you what is in there oils. THey only make fantastic claims about its performance. Many people have claimed the benifits of ROyal Purple, only to lose their engines and decided maybe that wasn't quite true. Delvac 400 is good oil, but Mobil 1 is this best.

RP does use a small amount of boron in the formulation of their street oils......but not nearly as much as mobil 1. Boron is an effective AW agent. All of RP's street oils have a VI of over 140 except for their straight weights. VI is also affected by the amount of polymeric VI improvers used in an oil. RP does use some conventional in their street oils.......as I stated previously. RP will not give out exact percentages. Their racing oils are 100% synthetic. Mobil 1 is a good oil, but not the best, as there isn't a best oil.......only a best oil for a certain engine under a certain type of operating conditions. Mobil 1 0w30R is the mobil 1 that is used in nascar engines. It has several times the amount of EP/AW's that are used in the regular mobil 1 line.......it is not API approved due to the amount of phosphorus used. No synthetic is 100% PAO. Esters or AN's must be used for miscibility, due to the poor solvency of PAO. There is no oil that will prevent engine wear, and no oil that will protect your engine if you lose the hydrodynamic oil film for an extended amount of time. RP is an excellent oil and is making a reputation for itself in professional drag racing........but redline is the one to beat in that arena........and it is a POE formulation.

Here is a link to a UOA on RP 5w30 in my 98 GMC sierra. It is one of the best seen on a GEN 1 SBC.

Whats the story with Mobil Drive Clean ... i read somewhere its a synthetic blend oil ... i mix it in with my valvoline .. only becuase it was 1.09 a quart while valvoline was much more ... anyone got any details on this particular oil ????

Mobil drive clean is a regular conventional. The drive clean plus is a synthetic blend. IIRC, mobil drive clean is a twin to exxon superflo. It seems to be an unusually volatile oil, that causes consumption problems in some engines. It is not an overly impressive oil, and really isn't any better than valvoline. However, there is nothing about it that will hurt your engine, and it will do the job adequately. If you are looking for a good bargain oil..................chevron supreme is regularly 1.14 a quart at walmart, and is often .99 a quart at tractor supply company (TSC) stores. Chevron supreme uses a group II basestock and a very good additive package and is one of the best conventional oils on the market...........especially for the price.
