Pulled my Cam for Fuel Pump Push Rod
Before everyone says "search it, there are already a lot of threads on this." I've done it. My push rod was jammed, and the bolt on the block for holding it was out. I tried needle nose pliers, i tried small vice grips, i tried to get a thread die up there and the space was too tight, tried to mcgyver an extension to it and nothing. That beezy is stuck. I pulled my cam out and there's MAYBE an eighth of an inch worth of rod sticking out on the cam side. I tried pushing it out with my hand but that thing won't budge at all. Does anyone have any ideas or advice?

Needle nose vice grips? Is the end of the rod at the cam mushroomed? Does the rod push toward the cam?

nope, no mushroom. You can see the end where it comes out by the cam, looks perfectly fine. If you look at the end where the pump would be, the grooves in the end are from trying to grab it with the vice grips. I've been trying to push it up toward the cam, so far no luck.

Could be varnished in, try soaking with some carb cleaner and working it back and forth

Have you tried doing a search? nah just kidding. I know your probably not in the mood. Stupid question, have you tired turning the rod? It has a a long bolt to hold it at one time I can see from one of the pics the bolt impression on the push rod. The rod must have gotten bent? I mean for it to be hung in there normally gravity just lets them drop down and out if the plate is removed. Can you move it in towards the motor and then try to turn? The motor doesn't look all gummed up or full of carbon, have you run into large deposits? Has it had a major something that could have over revved the motor to make the rod bend? I guess it is possible, anything can happen. But I would think it would take some major mistreatment to to something like that to a pushrod of that type and thickness. Jim

I agree, I've had lifters that would not budge..a couple squirts of carb cleaner and they slide right out. Don't underestimate the power of varnish!

Have you removed the bolt that enters from the front of the block into the pushrod hole? I have seen people put too long of a bolt and cause that.

A couple of questions, the engine looks very clean like a very recent build. Have you had it running long? if just built, did you use too long of a bolt to hold the push rod in and over tighten it to marr the rod? we need more info...

From the pics there's no mushrooming or galling that shows it's seized. I would try to punch it out with a wooden dowel or something that won't damage the cam bearing. Possibly some heat and oil may help. Or too long a bolt as posted above.

what info would you like? built it 5 years ago, drove at least 10 miles a day, runs on royal purple, premium unleaded, and american spirit... Been well taken care of, no deposits found. The bolt on the front of the block was taken out a while ago, the marks on the rod are from the vice grips. Ive tried carb cleaner a few times and haven't gotten anywhere. I just now tapped the end by the pump a couple times with a hammer and it moved a little bit back up toward the motor but not much to generate hope. I'm guessing the rod is bent, would be the only explanation really but idk how it came about. Cam shaft is clean, pump was used when I built it but I didn't know that until later. Tried the twist, which just resulted in bloody knuckles and the rod moving farther up into the motor and less surface to hold onto with the pliers, vice grips, etc.

If the rod is damaged from a long bolt you may have to push the rod down enough to miss the cam and go to an electric pump..

Do you have access to a welder? If so I would suggest welding a length of small chaim to the end of the rod. Then you could get ahold of it and pull with a come a long or other pulling device.

It has to be bent to be stuck in there that bad! I agree with the small brass drift and a hammer. If you can get any leverage on it from the inside, that would be your best bet. I can't believe that needle nose grips and carb cleaner wont release it. Crazy!

I know you said the bolt in the front was out but is it all out. Is it possible that it got tightened down and broke off, leaving some threads jammed against the rod, holding it in place.

Brass punch, hammer, marvel mystery oil. TAP both end with brass punch/hammer until you get movement. Squirt oil on it, keep working back and forth. It will come out, unless it is well bent. If bent, then you might to have to use a heat wrench. Then you might to replace cam bearing after the carnage...

The last bbc I put together I used an ARP fuel rod. They are lighter than stock and alot stronger. I'd recommend one for replacement when the time comes. They don't cost much more than a stock rod. As long as you have a stout fuel pump. Otherwise they can be too light and you might experience rod float at high rpms. Either way your going to need a new one, just thought I'd throw my experience in there for an idea. Let us know how you get it out!

try welding another bolt to it and pry it out that way, or drill and tap the end of the rod ad thread a bolt into it, then pull on it that way. or punch it from the inside (by where the cam bearing is)

If you do the drill and tap, make sure you seal the oil return hole in the block under it. You don't want the shavings in the pan.
Sears and SnapOn have Extractors Like These that may help. They will at least help you twist the rod. Once again, seal the oil return hole.
