question on cab/frame
I have the opportunity to purchase a 61 cab that is sitting on 65 short bed frame. I am being told just need to get new mounts??? Will the original mounts off a 65 work or really any short bed cab mounts from 60-66?
It is a bare cab but rolling chassis swb frame for under $500. Thoughts. Thanks |

Re: question on cab/frame
Thanks, I think as long as I have title with cab and title it as 61, it would not matter what I do or how i change it up. Not sure but will do some checking.

Re: question on cab/frame
All your doing is registering the cab, they won't even look as long as you have a title to the cab!

the funny part of all this is if you ever get in a major accident( of course it will never happen to me, I'm invicible) and someone gets hurt back or killed. that is where they really start to dig into the vehicle. insurance companies will love this as they will look for any excuse to walk away without paying. 2 different serial #. which vehicle killed the person; the ser # which we insured or the other one which is on the vehicle which we didn't insure?. I know this will never happen to me, just pay for the rest of your life perhaps. ron |

Re: question on cab/frame
Ron, Assuming? No.
He will take his signed title into DMV and pay the title transfer cost, registration (maybe) and no one will even look at the truck. He will build it and drive it and then sell it, 99% of buyers won't look or even know about the last digits on the frame. On the last part, this is quite possible for an insurance company to do so this would be the gamble.

Re: question on cab/frame
so you are actually advising him to take a gamble on it?
first time that I ever got pulled over by the police, I was driving my 1st car on the road and it was a 36 Ford sedan 1961 or 62. I didn't do anything, he was just going to check me out. this is the only time that I have ever heard of this being done. he asked me to show him that this car belonged to the registration that I had given to him. I couldn't do it then and he gave me 3 days to have it done. I went to the MVO and a fellow came out to the car and had a scraper in his hand and went to the top of the frame on the drivers side and very quickly said there it is and he checked and it matched and I was smiling. but what if it hadn't of matched. I would have been up the creek. I guess that it was a fluke that I was asked that, but it can happen. this is no B/S. it doesn't cost much to make sure that you are legal. ron |

Re: question on cab/frame
To answer your question, you will have to drill front cab mount holes in the cab, inboard from the originals. The cab mounts for a '63-'66 will work just fine.
Regarding the title/Vin issue. I don't know the laws in Texas, but here in Idaho if you are transfering a title for a vehicle that came from another state, a VIN inspection is required. I don't think the ladies at the DMV office look any further than the tag on the cab or body. If the vehicle is not driveable and you do not want to trailer it to the DMV, you can request a Police officer to come to your location and inspect the VIN there. Several factors may or may not influence the officer to ask questions. Just stating how it is here in Idaho. Texas may be different. Quote:

No I'm not saying he should do it, I am just giving information for him or others to think about and the probability of Someone finding out. The best option is keeping it on the original chassis or, have a copy of the frames title in your name along with the cab title. My dad went through the inspection mess with his crewcab because it was a c60 and he wanted to title it as a c20. Took over 3 months to get stuff squared away. Also DMV may title the truck as a present year if they want to.

Re: question on cab/frame
Good info by all. To be honest with these old trucks, even if we purchase one done, to assume one is all original would be a miracle. I am just going to look for one complete with a title and be done with it. I will start from the ground up.

Re: question on cab/frame
The real question I had is I am reading that others tend to go with a 65 frame vs. a 60-62? I may be wrong due to the mid years having better suspension.
Once I have the cab mounts moved and on where they need to be, what box/front clip should I get or is it all interchangeable? Thanks for any info. |

Re: question on cab/frame
Personally I am not a fan of the '60-'62 frames. I prefer the '63-'66 frames if you are going to build a '60-'66 truck. About 90% of the body parts are interchangeable from '60-'66. Of course the '60-'63 cabs and doors are specific to those years, and '64-'66 cabs and doors are specific to those years.

Re: question on cab/frame
I bought a 40 Ford coupe once in California and changed titles there. Moved to Nevada and they did look at the frame numbers. I had to get California to change the title, they did.
However, in Texas the county tax offices register your truck and they DO NOT look at the frame numbers. So Clyde is right for Texas, but not in other areas. Strange huh?

Re: question on cab/frame
The guy still has it. I am getting a titled 61 cab and a 65 short bed frame. The title is for a short bed so all is good there, plus from what researching frame year is better suspension. I pick it up in a couple weeks

Re: question on cab/frame
All that needs to be done for the front cab mounts is drill 2 new holes inboard from the originals. But if the OP wants to be detailed, he will need to move the recessed pockets so that the heads of the bolts are flush with the floor.
Of course he is not ready for licensing and registration. But we are just trying to make sure he knows what is needed in his area for doing so. It would really suck to put all the work into building this truck, only to find he can't license it for some reason.

Re: question on cab/frame
Google :
texas vehicle identification number verification merger I had to do this when I rolled my Toyota truck. It's easy if you have both titles, they just merge them. If you don't, there are a number of ways to get a new title issued. |
