Re: Dana 60 alignment

To my knowledge, it is not adjustable on a king pin 60. On a ball joint axle, you can get adjustable ball joints to adjust camber. But it seems a little odd that a bent axle would wear the outside of the tire, so I would keep looking. Have you owned this truck for awhile and it just started? I would look into rebuilding the king pin bearings. Pirate4x4.com has an article on rebuilding a king pin 60 that's pretty good. These bearings, races, and king pins are expensive, though. Figure at least $200 to do all 4.

Maybe somebody else can offer more info.

Re: Dana 60 alignment

More info definately required.

It is virtually impossible for anything to be worn or bent that would change the camber to a "positive" situation. This would tilt the tire outward at the top, running on the outside of the tread....which is the only thing that shimming the spindles would fix.

Unless you mean both outside edges of each tire......In that case, it is simple. Underinflation.
This is a very common thing with bigger off road tires, especially "mud" types. When the tread lugs wear to the point of looking like a saw-blade with the tips pointed foreward, it is purely from underinflation. The tires tilt toward the direction of a turn and that pushes the tread into the pavement. You need to have them inflated to the point where that outer lugs do not touch the ground when going straight.

Air-down for off-road of course....

Re: Dana 60 alignment

the tires are wearing on the extreme outside of both front tires. i have changed the air pressure a few times and that doesn't seem to be the problem. perhaps the kingpins are just worn out . just trying to see if anyone else has this same problem.

Re: Dana 60 alignment

I never heard of this problem on a straight axle, inside tread yes but outside tread???

How much toe in do you have (I still cant imagine this to be the problem but need to ask)? and do you have any pictures? Pictures speak a thousand words!

Tire size?

I still say under-inflation.

You haven't said anything about it driving badly....I'm not saying that you don't have some ball-joint/king-pin wear, but that still won't cause the tire wear pattern you are discribing.

Re: Dana 60 alignment

the tires are stock 215/85/16. i bought this truck 8 months ago. when i got it the front tires were almost new and had like 80 psi in them . soon after( like 4-5k miles) i started to notice outside edge tire wear. i rotated the front tires with 2 from the rear. the truck rode realy rough with 80 psi. right now i have 50 psi in the tires and this is the second set i have on there. the only part i have changed on the front end is the tie rod.

Re: Dana 60 alignment

Have you checked toe? It would have to be WAY out of whack to trash tires, but that's what mine was doing when I got it. I'm running 235's and don't have a lot of miles on it since adjusting toe, but it was mostly doing just one tire.

Re: Dana 60 alignment

Probaly toe. It doesen't have to be out much to wear. Toe will cause your tires to scrub. Instead of them rolling straight like this || they are probaly rolling like \/ or /\. Usualy specs are total toe of positive .10 degrees plus or minus .20 degrees tolerance. You can probaly use a tape measure to get it close but I'd take it somewhere to have toe set if you drive it alot.

Re: Dana 60 alignment

just an fyi.

when i did my sas tahoe.the tops of the tires stuck out at the top ,way too far.causing outside edge wear.
i found out 2 things.

1.THERE IS A COMPANY THAT MAKES ADJUSTABLE LOWER KINGPINS!!
and they worked awesome!!
2. my frt dana 60 was from a bigblock snowfighter series truck, and was told the axle had that arch built into it so when the big block for and snowplow went on the axle would be straight and alignment would then be within specs.

how much of2 is correct, idk, but the adj kingpins fixed my truck!
