Bypass neutral safety switch

I've recently bought a 1986 GMC Sierra 1500, and I'm having fun with it. It came out factory with a 6.2 diesel and a 700 auto transmission. The previous owner blew the diesel and converted it to a 350, at the same time he changed it to a 4 on the floor manual, an SM-465 to be exact, with the original 3.73 rearend. Needless to say I go nowhere fast, thats ok I don't need any tickets anyway.. LOL
My question right now is. How do I bypass the old neutral safety switch on the column and in turn activate some back-up lights when in reverse?
One other question. is it possible to move the steering wheel closer to the dash, this thing sticks out a mile? I use to have a 69 GMC 3/4 ton and the steering wheel didn't stick out this far.
Thanks for any help.
