Anyone stiff Hitch there truck??

Like it says?? I'm starting a new job and I'll have a company truck but my new job means alot of travel during the week...So I want to take my truck so I can cruz around maybe hit a few different cruz nights where ever I am......

Yea I know a trailer woud be best but since I'll be staying in hotels/motels I don't want storage issues I figured a stiff hitch I could just throw in the back of the truck.....and tow dollies are to pricey for the amount I'll be using it

I would figure that most of the towing would be 100 miles or less some highway ....tow it to work monda and home fridays

truck is a 70 lwb with a 2 piece DS

By stiff hitch, do you mean the kind that is bolted to the truck or like the old style U-Haul ones that were clamped to the bumper?

I have never done it with one of these, but I don't see why it would not work.
I have pulled cars that way before a lot.

If you do remember it will take longer to stop because of the truck behind, I know from experience.

If you have an automatic transmission you will have to disconnect the driveshaft.

never heard of a stiff hitch, but if we are talking tow bar, then I have towed many many many miles like that. (tx to oh, eastern PA to OH) tons and tons of local tows, towed 70 ton tanks like that in the army for 7 1/2 years, towed hummers and duce & 1/2 trucks and a bunch of tracked vehicles too
They are safe as long as the driver is paying attention and is not an idiot.

i'd think it would be best to concentrate on your form of incme first and foremost. and not inject something like this into the working relationship that you r trying to establish

i'd almost be willing to bet the company wouldn't approve of the use of THEIR truck as a personal tow rig.

especially for a new hire.

I tend to agree....wait a few weeks, and get the feel of the job first.
Then, convince the company to pay your gas, and insurance, then use your truck for the company and create a tax deduction in the bargain.

thanx Guys and I get the hole waiting a bit and I agree as far as using my truck well I don't ever see it being use in severe duty which is what it would be...I'm def going to wait but want to keep my options open LHM I must of had the same MOS as you ..I was in a maintance batalion so I so get the towing track stuff too...I just never saw anyone doing it with a civi vechical??

My in-laws tow a Cherokee behind their motor home using an adjustable A-bar. The bar pins to the Cherokee and a ball hitch on the RV. The Cherokee tows with the transfer case in neutral. Works great.

For a 2W truck, pulling the drive shaft for every tow would be a pain. I would keep an extra U-joint handy for when you drop a cap and loose the pins.

I was a 63E, M1 hull systems mechanic.
Way back in the day, this was the prefered method of towing. Even show cars and salt flats cars back in the 50's were flat towed like this.
While agreeing with the comments of not using the new boss's time and vehicles, I'll still point out a couple things...
If your bumper is anything better than scrap metal, remove it and either hook up to the frame horns, or use a piece of flat stock mounted up as a towing bumper. I wasted a couple bumpers before I learned.
If you fire up the engine, and leave the trans in neutral, then you don't need to pull the driveshaft.
A harness can be made easily to hook up the tail lights of your 67 - 72 to the trailer harness on the truck towing.

I'll try to post some photos of the stuff I use/have used for tow bar towing tomorow.
