Fuel guage problem - how to tell if it is the sender or guage?

Can anyone give me some suggestions on how to figure if the guage is good other than pulling the seat and sender to test? Also if I pull the sender can I just ground it to the tank and move it to test it?

Any help is appreciated.

Slide seat forward, unplug the wire fomr tank, ground it. If the guage bottoms out, then the sender is bad. If it stays maxed out, then your brown wire is probably grounded out.

You can also disconnect the fuel gauge wire (brown) from the fuse block. When you disconnect it you gage should go to max (over full), if you ground out the fuse block terminal you gage should move to empty. If it is reading over full now you probably have a broken wire, most likely under the door sill plate.

Thanks guys, I'll try testing it. I have two trucks both with fuel guage problem. One stays at empty, the other at about a quarter. BTW not sure what you mean by disconnecting at the fuse block - i.e. remove a fuse, or does it just connect to a terminal on the block?

A brown wire plugs into the front of the fuse box, that is the one going to the fuel tank.
