Just Another Kiwi

I am having problems with my '66 C20 Chevy Truck, my brake pedal seems to want to load up every now and then, pedal comes up hard and overnight seems to back off. Truck has new M/C and all new Wheel/C fitted approx. three months ago, Truck is a daily driver, this problem has only started over the last couple of weeks. Any help would be much appreciated. My brakes would get very tight after a few minutes of stop and go driving. Then the brakes would start to drag. Turned out that my brake pedal push rod wasn't adjusted properly. The MC plunger was not returning fully to home position. Pressure would gradually build. Simple fix if that's the problem.

Yup! I had the same problem with mine. Adjusted the master push rod and all is well now. You will probably need to adjust your shoes after you adjust the pushrod...

Stock standard M/C no booster, I will check the pushrod and adjust (if needed), thanks for the feed back I will keep you all posted. Thanks Robin.

How do I know how far to adjust the brake pedal push rod.

Back off the nut that locks the rod into place. Back the push rod just enough so the tip is just a millimeter or 2 from contacting the plunger. Screw the lock nut into place to lock it again.

Yesterday afternoon I adjusted the pushrod 2/3mm off the plunger (gave me about 10mm freeboard at the pedal) did up the locknut and went about a ten km drive, by the time I got home the brake pedal was pretty well loaded up, I left it over night and I have just come in from testing the pedal this morning and it is now back to where it should be, something tells me it could be a M/C problem, any ideas anyone. If those rubber lines that go to the front weel cylinders and from the rear axle to the frame look old, replace them. They swell up internally.

I have replaced the front brake hoses when I did the M/C the rear one seems to be okay, I will keep an eye on it.
I have readjusted the brake pedal push rod a Couple of times and I am pretty sure I have it where it seems to work properly now.
