Steering box frame repair

I eventually will be doing crossover steering, so there will be a lot less stress on the frame, but I was in there today and realized the frame had cracked before and the last guy had tried to weld together to fix it. Anyways it has cracked again. I need a frame repair kit but they are 65.00. I have a sheet of 10 ga plate. Could I cut that up and weld it in? Correctly weld the frame, weld in a inner piece and an outer piece? Does anyone have a diagram for the shape of it, or does it not have to be exactly like the pre manufactored ones? Any input would be appreciated. By the way, it is a 85 1/2 ton swb with 8 in lift and 38.5x15 on 3/4 axles.

the contours are pretty severe, i doubt you'd be able to recreate it very cost effectively. however you decide to fix it, i would highly recomend a brace to go with it. only makes sense to me to do everything you can possibly do to prevent it from happening again. here's a link to one on EBay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2481489379

edit: i didnt thoroughly read your post, i just noticed that you have crossover. since it puts more lateral loads on the frame than the standard front to back steering, the brace is a must.

Jeremy, maybe you need to re-read the thread one more again..


i think you would get away with using your 10ga. my frame broke and that is pretty much what i used. it has worked just fine, though mine isnt welded, it uses the bolts for the steering box.. i plan on redoing it eventually. a sheet on both sides should do fine, and if you are any good with a welder you could make you a brace as well.

I will definitly make my own brace, $110 on ebay, that means $150 in the real world. Now the hard part, my skinny ass removing a 38 inch bogger to get to the frame more easily!

Jon, i did misread the thread, but what i said still applies. also, the 10ga might be working on your truck, but you're only turning 32" tires with it. Joey's 38" Boggers are sure to put way more stress than a 32.

i'd personally still drop the coin and have the parts that are known to work, rather than trying to rig something that might work.

Justin, Tim actually has his own business now, makes for nice discounts on truck parts.

Granted I will still use a brace, but the stock frame is 1/4" thick, and I will add a piece of 1/4" inside and outside. That would make the frame 3/4" thick there, with the pressure more evenly spread out (if I use a piece that is about 2" longer front and back) and the load will be at a different angle that the brace will now hold. Do you think that still won't be enough?

Weld the cracks together on the frame first, grind them out in a "v" pattern and weld them up. I simply just welded mine up and install the bolt in brace from ORD. I cracked the frame on my 1/2 ton with 31" tires...

I think since you have pretty big tires I would weld that plate in there and then get a bolt in brace, they recommend using both methods with tires larger than 37".

I went ahead and order a frame repair kit from JCWhitney (Had a 15% off catalog) and will weld that in. See I counted my chickens before they hatched, I removed the steering box to realized the frame flares out at those bolt holes, isn't flat like I thought, so I would have had a hell of a time making my own plate to match that flare. I did decide to make my own box brace, after studying the manufactered ones, I realized I could make my own with the metal I already had. I could make one using about $10 in material, where the going price is $110 for a premanufactured one. I also order my crossover steering kit from BlackBird customs, best deal I could find. I would have made my own frame repair kit and crossover setup and saved myself about $250, but with working one full time and one part time job, I just don't have time. Can't want to get that back together and drive it again, these little cars are driving me up the wall.

Pretty sure the frames are 3/16s and the 1 tons are 1/4in but then again who's arguing =-p

I would also use ord's piece because its already contoured for the frame
