Harmonic balancer

So I'm working on this gen vi 454 and I need to get the harmonic balancer off to pull the timing chain cover off, got the bolt out, found out my small puller is messed up, and my large puller tried to remover the outer half of the Harmonic balancer from the inner half. So now I'm stuck trying to figure out how to remove the balancer to get the timing cover off so I can check to make sure the timing chain is alright. Then I can take off the oil pan and make sure nothing looks broken in there. So does anyone know how to pull the harmonic balancer off without it coming apart?

Re: Harmonic balancer

You need a puller that pulls from the center hub.. Harbor Freight sells one..

You'll need this tool to put it back on:

Re: Harmonic balancer

You have to be careful and only pull the balancer by the drilled and tapped holes on the hub center. Also be sure any puller you use doesn't push on the drilled and tapped hole in the end of the crankshaft. Typically there is a slug with a dimple for the puller screw to fit that goes in first. It will protect the end of the crank while you pull the balancer off. Sometimes the pointed end of the puller will be large enough not to go into the drilled and tapped hole. It still can damage the start of the crankshaft thread. I always recommend using something to protect the crankshaft. Nothing good is going to happen if you damage the threads.

If your wrong puller moved the outer ring on the balancer even a small amount, the balancer is ruined.. The inner hub is bonded to the outer ring by a rubber ring and if that bond gets damaged or releases, at some point (you never know when) the ring will come off when the engine is running.. Lots of carnage will be the result.. Replace that balancer...

You can rent one from Auto Zone. Return it and get your money back.

Re: Harmonic balancer

A good quality balance puller/installer will thread into the crank, ensuring no damage to the threads provided the user fully installs it. Here's the style I have used for the last twenty years, https://www.ebay.com/itm/16403524292...MAAOSwffReIVn2

Only one I ever bought and glad I did.

Re: Harmonic balancer

This is the set I bought, which is surprisingly good quality. It has all the pieces for both installing and removing harmonic balancers.
