Going to look at a 67!

So, I'm going to look at a 67 swb tonight after work, is there anything I should keep an eye out for in particular? Certain things that are really not worth fixing? I know it needs quite a bit, been sitting for a while with no engine or trans which is no big deal, I want to go ls and fuel injected anyway. Just curious if there are any trouble spots to keep an eye out for.
Thanks!

Went and looked at it, it's...... well it's a truck. The guy won't give me a price said to just make an offer. Oh, and it's a small window.

Any ideas on what I should offer or if its even worth the trouble? The drivers door won't open (not sure why) and it does have some rust in the floorboard. It had just rained and was still sprinkling so I didn't want to get under it and really check everything out. The guy said I could come look at it some time next week and we can pull the interior and such apart so i can get a good look, its a friends dad selling it for a guy he is storing it for, so he doesn't care to show me everything wrong with it. What I'm not sure about is the front grille/core support area seems messed up, other than that the body is really straight except the rockers/cab corners. Oh, and the tailgate. I have no idea why someone would cut a rectangle out of it...

Re: Going to look at a 67!

The less rust, the better! Esp the cab. Take your time and shop around. Don't just buy the first one you look at. I shopped for 4 months before I bought mine. And I still wish I would have shopped more. If you don't think it's a good buy...just walk away. And remember you can always take pics and post them up for everyone here to help you.

Re: Going to look at a 67!

Yeah you can always walk away. Most of the time it's a good thing, even though you're so infatuated with the truck at time. It's always a good thing to sleep on it too. Take a few days to let emotion not be a factor in the buy. As funkytechmonkey said, the less rust the better, most especially in the cab!

Re: Going to look at a 67!

Consider what it will take to get it where you want it. Add up the 'good deal' price of the parts.

If the cab isn't pretty close to rust free the body isn't worth much. The bed looks pretty solid, but that shouldn't make the deal on the body overall.

I've bought a few vehicles in that condition and put them on the road. It's way cheaper to buy a running vehicle, even if it needs major work, than put one like that back on the road.

Re: Going to look at a 67!

I bought a truck that ran great and looked awesome but after blasting it I then found out what a pos it was. The only thing I kept was the frame and the cab. So I'll know what to look for on my next buy. Take your time and look deep into it. If the frame is rusted up and has major pitting it's not worth buying.

Well, since nobody specifically mentioned the cab supports, above the windshield (inside & out), around the heater box, and across the top of the firewall I will add those areas...

Offer Him 500 dollars for it. I got mine for 400 and it was running. Running bad and smoked like a freight train because the rings where bad but it was a great bug killer.

Re: Going to look at a 67!

When you go to look at it just pretend your looking at it for a friend . that way you can look at everything you really need to! don't be afraid to walk, you don't owe the seller anything! truck looks to me anyway like it might be an ok deal it just depends on how much $ and how much work you want to do. best of luck. cheers, Pat

Re: Going to look at a 67!

I am going to go look at it again next week probably, I was thinking about offering $500 actually already but I'm not sure if I should or not. I have found a couple other 67-72's for 1200-2000 and some seem to be in roughly the same shape, and a couple a lot better. I really like the advice pat 70/71 gave of looking at it for a friend, I always find everything wrong with vehicles for everyone else but overlook blaringly obvious things when I buy something for myself because I get too caught up in buying another project. I have no need to buy something soon anyway so I might just keep looking if when I get a closer look its rough in the important spots.

Re: Going to look at a 67!

Check the cab very closely under the windshield and cowl area. Look under the dash on both sides and you will see a seam above the fuse block on the drive side and above the heater box on the right side. If you look closely and follow that seam all the way up you will see it goes to the windshield. If you pull the cowl you can see that seam at the windshield and look in under the cowl and make sure that seam is not rusted. What happens many times is it will rust at the windshield and then run down inside the cab along that seam and rust out that seam. Be sure to check both sides. Like was mentioned earlier, check the hole for the wiper motor and antenna cable. You cannot see the seam with the cowl on it, you have to pull the cowl. Check that very closely. Also, check the firewall where that wiring harness lays. Pull that wiring harness and take a screwdriver and go along that edge to check for rust. As for me, if they are rusted there along the seams under the cowl, get another cab. Pull the cowl and then take a water hose and run water onto the windshield, get a flashlight and look under the dash to see where it comes in, best of luck

$500 sounds like quite a bit to me, I would offer like $200 or $300. Maybe I am just cheap but that truck needs a ton of work. Just my $0.02

Re: Going to look at a 67!

From where I'm sitting, it don't look too bad to me!

I would probably offer $450.00. I don't think I would pay more than $500 though. Ehh, it's a project, it's going to need some work. Right?

I would rather buy something with a motor and transmission even if they aren't currently operational. You know you'll have to drop some coin for a motor and trans if you don't allready have something available.

I bought a 68 parts truck with title, no motor or trans, for $250. Sometimes we get lucky!

Good luck!

Re: Going to look at a 67!

The other thing is 67's have many one year only parts. Makes it a challenge, especially when they are rough like this one.

Re: Going to look at a 67!

I haven't went and looked at it again yet. I figure I will look at all the places you guys mentioned and if they are pretty clean offer the guy $500. If he takes it, great, I have another project, if not I can put that money into my other rust bucket. I will probably go look at it Thursday after work so I will let you all know.

I would start at $200, you can always go up. I think for $500 you could do a little better than that one.

He may get unfriendly if you offer 200. The scrap value is probably $300 or so on this truck. I'd buy it for parts at around 450 or less if the rims are good, core support, a fender or two, door or two, there are AC parts too. Take that stuff off then scrap the rest and get paid 250? for scrap value.

If it was mine and someone offered $200, i would tell them to get lost. The truck really doesn't look bad in the pics, and it is a 67 shortbed. The box looks decent. I would say it is easily worth $500 if the frame looks Ok and there is a title. Remember, you can load it up and go straight to the scrap yard and get $400 with out touching it. I just sold a 72 shorty not near as nice as that for $450. And the guy came 3 1/2 hours to get it.
I would maybe let the guy throw out his price and go from there. Maybe he thinks it is worth $2,000, who knows?

Re: Going to look at a 67!

Don't go crazy and lowball the guy to bad (ie 200), if you did that to me I would turn around and tell you that for you 5000, anyone else 500. Lowballs really tick me off. That truck does not look that bad in pictures (pictures do lie when it comes to rust), there is more than 500 in parts there. I would set a high price you could feel comfortable with and then go a few hundred less to start. Me personally I am thinking 600 maybe 700 if the cab is clean around the windows, starting at 400. Now don't be suprised if the owner thinks it is worth a fortune cause he saw one on Barrett go for 40k. If I was closer to it I would consider it for the fleetside bed.
