Sally
Hey guys I've been lurking for awhile and getting tons of ideas and finally pulled pictures off the camera and figured I'd do a build thread. Sally is a 60 short step, I went to an auction 10 years ago to buy a power wagon ambulance as a service vehicle for my lock business and it sold for 10 grand....but I kinda fell in love with this truck and picked it up for next to nothing. This is a pic of her last fall before we started resto I'm not done yet but am getting closer.

Re: Sally
I put a pontiac 400 in right after I bought her but I picked up a rebuilt 283 on craigslist for $750 I'm going to try it but I'm kind of used to pontiac torque so I don't know how long it will stay in lol.

Re: Sally
as of now I'm about a week from getting all the old laquer paint media blasted off I like the patina but she had enough cancer that the patches really stand out so new paint is coming soon! I'm the first civilian owner of this truck it the underside of the hood is still olive drab i'm guessing corp of engineers or army had this truck originally, after that it was volunteer fire in southwest kansas for 25 years so I have ran into some interesting wiring issues and LOTS of extra holes....here are a few of how the truck sits now. I hate the bumper flip, did it on a lark and will put it back rightside up soon.

Re: Sally
The bed was completely gone, I think from the strange stuff still bolted in the back that it had a pump mounted when it was a firetruck which makes sense, I'm building this as a daily driver/light hauler I have a crappy truck for manure gravel etc but this ones bed will get lightly used so I picked up a 2007? bed that had been in a wreck and the fenders were mangled but the bed steel was pretty close to perfect for $50 again on craigslist I love/hate that site....the gas tank is a boyds and I'm looking for the specs for any of you other xframe owners out there I've misplaced them at the moment... but it fits like a glove thank you Dan and Dave! the fill is a motorcycle popup and is going on top of the drivers side rear fender.

Re: Sally
Great looking truck. Looks like the work is going along good. I have to agree w/the bumper flip...i think it'd look better factory. How about some pics of the pontiac engine sitting in there.

Re: Sally
I'll try and snap some of the 400 tonight, it fits like it was made to go in there, as I said I kind of hate to pull it but its getting tired and for the price I picked up that fresh 283 I"m gonna give it a shot.

Re: Sally
Dan at Boyds found my tank specs for me if anyone else has a 60-62 frame and wants to know. The 63 and up tanks will fit but this one fills the frame rails.

Re: Sally
Thanks for starting the build thread, that's a nice looking truck with an interesting history. I'm also interested in the Pontiac installation. I can appreciate why you're making the change, but if I ever got a Pontiac engine in my truck, I'd be hard pressed to ever take it out again. I've always preferred them over the SBC.

Re: Sally
too true Mark, the swap is almost purely for cost reasons, I don't know/trust any of the machine shops around here enough to put a couple grand in the 400, but its going in the corner of my shop so you never know what I'll feel like in a couple of years.

Re: Sally
Nice truck! Man that patina looks great, I would mess around and try and match the patina rather than paint it.

Re: Sally
Looks good
Yep, media blasting is the only way to go IMO.....of course it has to be done by someone that knows what they're doing.

Re: Sally
Good looking truck and good build thread.
I'll be in Manhattan in a couple weeks for a game, I'd drive my truck but it doesn't seat six very well. |
