Repair Manual Question - Engine Torque Values
I work from a 1977 Chevrolet Light Duty Repair Manual. Every section shows a page for Specifications. These pages give torque values.
I cannot find torque values for the engine section. A page for Specifications are not shown in any of the 3 indexes (main, 6cyl, 8cyl). The last page of the engine section is Specifications for engine measurements, but no torque values are shown. I am certain that it is reader error on my part, but can anyone guide me to where the torque values for engines are shown? Thanks! |

Thank you! That copy is readable, and the print screen is also. I added the page to my book.
I am tightening valve cover and oil pan bolts. I found somewhere on this forum 80 inch lbs for the 1/4 inch bolts and 165 inch lbs for the 5/16 inch bolts. I wanted to see what the book showed, but I cannot find those values in my book. I could not make myself get them that tight, so I chose 50 and 75. Those values are far tighter than I have ever gotten them. So far, the puddling seems to have stopped. |

I’ve always gone by feel. Never got lucky trying to torque them.
What type of gasket? Cork, cork/rubber, rubber etc are different kinds. |

Cork. I always used to do the same. I never wanted to take a chance of mashing the gaskets or de-forming the sheet metal flanges, so I believe I was too easy on the tightening. I always had leaks. Now they are a lot tighter than I ever put them. I used the torque wrench to make sure that I tightened each one the same.

I did look at the 1977 manual and it is strange there is no mechanical torque specs for the engine listed. Either way, hope this helps. I would be sure to read the specs posted above closely- showing 50 FT LBS for rocker arm cover bolts- those little 1/4-20 bolts would never survive that or a cork gasket. I see the little note next to the torque value but cannot read what it refers to.

Thank you very much for this and also for the link. I printed the page for my book.
I found somewhere on this forum 80 in lb for the 1/4 inch bolts and 165 inch lb for the 5/16. This new page shows the same 80 in lb for the 1/4 inch, but shows 75 in lb for the 5/16. Less than the 1/4 for the 5/16 does not seem logical. I chose 50 for the 1/4 and 75 for the 5/16. |

Thank you for your clarification of this. Lucky for me, the 50 that I chose for the main oil pan bolts does not exceed the specification, and the 75 that I chose for the end bolts match what is required.
