Brake drums for K-10s

After tinkering for a bit I was able to get the brakes on my '65 K-10 to work well enough to be able to move it under its own power into my garage. Upon disassembly however, I quickly discovered that the brakes are well and properly borked.

At least the rears anyway. I'm assuming the fronts are probably as bad so I'm doing all four corners. Down to my local NAPA, where I was able to order everything I needed to do a comprehensive brake job, with the exception of drums. The only drums listed were rears for trucks with coil springs (C-10). I had pretty much the same luck on Rock Auto and other, similar sites. Through the rust we found a part number that looks like it could be "3854776", but that doesn't cross to anything.

At this juncture I'm not looking to do a disc brake upgrade if I don't have to. What have you guys used for drums?

Hmm... Perhaps I picked the wrong engine option, because I when I looked on Saturday, and the counter guy at NAPA did as well, the listings were for coil spring truck only. That was both on Rock Auto and napaonline. They appear to be rather standard GM/Bendix brakes.

I think on that 12 bolt all the brake hardware is the same C10 or K10. Did a quick check on Orielly's web site and they have them and show fit both.

We'll find out tomorrow. The guy at NAPA ordered up a pair of what he thought were correct based on what I brought into him. I don't know if I should be surprised that the listing are so vague.

Re: Brake drums for K-10s

Our local Napa / Autozone doesn't even show a 12 bolt rear end in a 1st gen c-10. They list the HO 32 and Dana only.......Its no use trying to explain it to them either.

My guy seems to be pretty good. We did find what looked like a number on one of the old drums, but we couldn't make any iteration of that number cross with an existing part number.

Interesting. This might be my backup plan if what the guy at NAPA ordered doesn't pan out.

Re: Brake drums for K-10s

That was about finding drums for the 6 lug Dana 44. The OP's '65 K10 should have the truck 12 bolt

The 6 lug drums for a truck 12 bolt should all be interchangeable up thru the mid to late 70's. You just need the drums for the 2" wide shoes. There was an option for 2-3/4" wide shoes. You could upgrade to those on the rear, but you would have to change the backing plate.

Re: Brake drums for K-10s

my drums on my 61k10 are all the same. they were just replaced when i bought the tk, so i don't know where they came from. they do have #'s on them. LMC lists 2wd the same as 4wd drums.

How the heck did I miss those? I ordered wheel cylinders from that exact page. Now I definitely have a backup plan if the drum from NAPA don't work. Thanks.

Re: Brake drums for K-10s

Success! You can add NAPA P/N 440-1071 to the list of drums that work.

With the exception of some minor plumbing the rear brakes are done. Onto the fronts; I'll get them rebuilt and ready for the second pair of drums, coming this afternoon.
